Best way to build a website?

Hello, I am starting a new online shop and I have a question what is the best way to build an online store?

Is it the best to straight away build it on the main domain with errors and fix them as you go on (will that hurt seo or website in any way)?

Or should I first build it on a second domain and when its "perfect" transffer files to the main one?

IMO, just build it on the domain you plan to use. Don't worry about a few errors - those can be fixed as you find them. No doubt, some of your visitors will point them out to you.

It helps to have a second set of eyes go through you site looking for errors, omissions, broken links, dead ends, etc.

There is no reason to try to make things perfect right out of the starting gate. Just fix the problems as they arise.

I agree with Steve, don't worry about errors as you can fix them as you go. I would suggest you start with a robust online shop like shopify, rather than trying to build it from scratch

Do it, and then fix errors along the way.

    It's a general rule indeed.

I suggest build it on your own domain. After doing that, you can now fix the errors along the way. You can check the site errors once you have the domain.

Thanks for the answer, that wont hurt SEO or anything right? I mean it takes time in woocommerce to build a whole website with menus and everything, so Google wont just index half done sites if you know what I mean?

Don't try to do things half-way in this arena of doing business. If you're going to build a store, build a store - and make sure every aspect of it is complete. When sales are coming in, you wont have time to go back and fix errors and other uncomplete things regarding your site. Your customers will see that you are an amateur, and probably wont be too confident your product's ability to fulfill their problem/desire.

What does "with errors" mean to you?

There are errors that you should move ahead with and then fix as needed and others that you shouldn't.

But in general, I think that it's better to have a good product that is out there than an almost perfect one that isn't.

I'd suggest you build it on a second domain. Or just use a staging environment.

There are two options (easier than others)
    WordPress
    Shopify

If you have a developer and you want to use PHP coding, that's good too. But CMS would allow you to make changes on the fly.

What a bunch of crap ! Their are people here on this forum that have domains and do not have content for their website. You can buy a domain and let the domain age before doing anything.

Here is an Example : Built a web site for a friend that had no content for it at the very beginning. Put the basic first page up without having any content. Just a Header and just a basic blank page, Once he provided some pictures a few days later the first page was changed. Than removed the private settings.
Since the website revolved around a sport his daughter participated in. The content was created after the events. So that means you do not always need good content first.

There are 5 distinct techniques to building your own particular site, Free manufacturers, Template Websites, WordPress Websites (blog/cms), Do-It-Yourself and Professional website architecture.

Every one of these ways, has advantages and disadvantages, however the easiest method to choose is to utilize the Developers triangle and pick which 2 of the 3 things is most imperative to you.

If you are looking to build an ecommerce website, then I would highly recommend you to use the Shopify Platform or the Woocommerce Platform with a WordPress installation.

If you use either one, you can build your website as you go. That is if you don't have a lot to build and a lot of products. If you do, I would recommend to build it first and then launch.

But, with such platforms it is not that hard to build a seamless online store.

    Hope this helps!

If you are inexperienced and think there will be a lot of errors, you can change your robots.txt file temporarily to disallow spiders until it is working properly. If people are expected to buy something, the commerce section needs to be working flawlessly to avoid compromising their credit cards. I echo using Woocommerce on WordPress or Shopify if you want something professional looking done quickly.

  • First of all you need Managed WordPress Staging site if you are going for Woocommece because Managed WordPress staging site lets you build and test your website without modifying the actual Content your visitors see on the live site.

Staging site use a domain that are auto generated by your hosting company. When you fully built on Staging site push it to Live website.

Or if you will test new plugins ,themes or anything, best is built in staging site or local host (Localbyflywheel) and migrated it to live site using WP All in one migration plugins.

One thing to bear in mind: for an online store you are going to want to use SSL. A platform like Shopify does this for you, whereas on a self-hosted WP site you'll have to do it yourself. Not as easy as buying a domain and slapping WP on it.

    Hi Steve,

I could see a lot of mixed opinions/ suggestions here as everyone has gotten results taking a different approach. It's totally your call now.

However, consider this scenario. In order to generate sales from your website, you need to offer them a smooth transition right from selecting the product, adding it to the cart, making the payment using the payment gateway, and tracking the delivery status. Irrespective of developing the website on any domain, it is necessary for you to ensure that the basic functionality of your e-commerce website is properly tested.

Since you are also planning to implement SEO, you need to think of long-term goals while developing your online store.
    Hope this helps. Thank you!

If you are a beginner then you can design your website with you sub domain. After finishing the website design you can transfer the site to the main domain. So, that you can avoid any mistakes or errors. Or, if you are good at it then you don't need to do it on sub domain, you can directly design your site on main domain itself. The main thing here is your experience and your confidence level. But you should be careful while transferring the website, because there may be any errors can occur.

DO it on your domain and it will work fine. Small errors are common with all websites and can be corrected one by one.
If you build on dummy domain and want to switch files to your domain later, you will be putting yourself in problem. You may need to edit plenty of links and that is going to make you sad.

The best choice is to create a website in a test domain where you can fix all the bugs and completely work with all the details (including SEO). Because if you do this in a domain where you plan to host a future site, Google can "slow down" page indexing. (verified by personal experience)

Regarding the choice of platform (someone already wrote above) for a website, I can recommend you carefully weighing the choice between developing a site from scratch and using a template theme.

You can build it on your own computer.

You can use MAMP which turns your computer into a server (not public) but just for yourself. It has a PHPMyAdmin so you can create MYSQL databases locally and connect to web app scripts like Magento/Wordpress/Oscommerce /zencart etc etc.

Then you change the config files and export the SQL over to your live hosting provider. This is what I do with my Wordpress websites. I build it on my computer make sure its okay on MAMP then transfer it online.

The easiest way is using WordPress and Woocommerce script it's free. Best for fewer products. Magento is more powerful and specific to the task but trickier.

Website making is step by step procedure ..

Domain Registration - A domain is unique address of your website, domain name looks like http://www.your-website-name.com , A domain's work is similar like your own home address. If you wanna that some body can find you, can meet you than you have to give them your home address, similarly if you wanna that your website should be reachable by your users, than you have to give website's domain link to your users and people.
Web Hosting - web hosting is required space for a website, where your codes exists. We can understand this thing like you have a your home's address, now you need your own land too, because you have too construct your home / office on that land. As well as hosting is a place where your programming files will be placed.

According to codes we can categories web hosting..
Linux Hosting - If your website made in Php
Window Hosting - If your website made in .net
Tomcat Hosting - If your site made in java and you need run time environment.

As well as we can categories above types in shared hosting, reseller hosting, VPS hosting, dedicated hostings etc types according to privileges and resources allocated in hosting..
Website Code - Now if you have domain and hosting, you need website code.
If you have programing knowledge you can design your website yourself , otherwise you can contact to a web development company
    Hope it will help...

You will run into a whole lot of secondary errors if you don't build it on the main domain.

I've built a few stores - using WordPress - and I've always used the main domain when building the store.

Building on the main domain first is also better for SEO - since you won't run into search engine redirect issues later on.

The website you have not started yet, has no seo position at all. So how can it hurt the asset which does not even exist. Yes, in my opionio, first option is better.
The second will come with the cost of website migration and that is not a piece of cake.

The best way to build an online shop is WordPress and Woocommerce. If you have not used it yet, Just try it. I hope You will love it.

You don't need to use the second domain. Because in WordPress you can easily enable maintenance mode and disable search engine indexing.
