Does company really need a multilingual or translated website ?

As google translation is getting so common, you can easily translate a website with foreign language. Eg. Japanese or Korea.
So, what do you guys think if there is a need to create a multilingual website to cater for different markets?

    Your website would be better and helps your visitor from other countries to understand your website contents. Like example, I am from indie, and visited your website, I can understand English just a little, so multilingual can help me to understand further.

    It's good to have a multilingual website for your business or translated website though it's not mandatory. If you will be having a multilingual website, it would show you have your business widening in other regions, in turn, expanding your reach, help you to optimize your community i.e allowing Non-English speaking community glean required information from the website.
    It will also showcase cultural sensitivity and helps in connecting with different people in different regions. It will embrace the diversity of your business in short.

  • Yeah, with traffic coming from around the world to websites across hardware platforms like mobile, laptops, etc. Having some form of translation is paramount if you want to be serious with reaching a large audience of people.

    You can always redirect the site content to a specific site where your translations happen. Is that something you have considered?

      Thanks for the idea on redirection. I have not thought of that. However, would this spread the effort thin as you need to put in a lot of effort to maintain another site. Putting multilingual does slow down the overall website speed.

    I don't target things I don't understand.

    If I don't speak the language, how the heck do I know If the translation is correct? No, not hiring bilinguals, I'm not ebay, Facebook or Google.

    My point is, you're not going to please everyone. Focus on what you know and understand because I seriously doubt anyone here has tapped out all the buyers of their first language.

    Focus on something and stop spreading yourself thin.

    Not every content is comfortable with Google translate. Most of them come out broken and spilt. If is better to maintain subdomains or sub folder to make sure that all visitor categories are taken care of

    I'm not a profi but from all info that I've read best solution is to use different domains for different countries. That way your using that country's top domain and can easily work with language-specific SEO. That solution is the hardest to maintain. Second, best could be using subdomains like en.website.com, also hard to maintain though. Depending on the site and if you use Webflow you could use folders, also a little hard to maintain if you have to make design changes but you have easy access to every page and work with language-specific SEO. Easiest to maintain is to use something like Bablic or Localize. You can find a bit more info

      Thanks for the reply. I understand that subdomain method may not be good, as every subdomain is like a brand new domain to google, and you need to reinvest SEO for each subdomain too. Having said that, it's cleaner. I personally use sub folder method like abc.com/zh .

    Managing a multi-lingual website is a tough task, so before displaying website in multiple language you need to be sure of the pros and cons of doing this. First think about your target market and language used there. If you are targeting non-english speaking audience then you can consider having your website shown in the language they use. Don't rely on google translation as it may not provide the correct translation. Whenever you are using multi language on your website then you must use HREFLANG and alternate tags. Make sure that you are providing multi language website only if you have a sizable visitors from those location / languages.

        Slowdown is not an issue at all, as there are multiple ways to take care of website speed. Using different domain is a good option but you have to dedicate a lot of time on those domain for branding and marketing.

    The problem with translated websites is that in order to actually do it right you need to invest a lot of time and effort. Different language usually means different needs because of cultural influences and people from different countries are interested in different qualities of the same product and might use it for different purposes.
    It is a good idea to translate your website and change the information presented if you sell just a few products and it is worth your time.
    It is a bad idea to make a bad translation since you will lose the trust of potential customers because of not professional UX.

      Thanks Dony for the comprehensive reply. I agree with you, especially on point 6 & 4. I did a simple test recently: I used adwords to test on translation, and there's huge searches on this. For eg, translate this website, translation to French... etc.. And this make me realize that people are also okay to do translation by themselves even the corporate website is not multilingual.

    No there is no need for creating a different website for targeting different segments. You just need to install the wordpress plugin like Polylang and download the language pack which converts the Website content according to the Selected Language.

  • google translation is useless when trying to write articles. You must invest in content writers. Facing same thing as I want to get some articles in thai and tried Google translator and it didn't work.

    I for once don't think you need to translate the website unless you have someone in the company that speak that language Also the amount of languages should depend on the countries you work with.
    One more point to this about is that google translate mostly don't do a really good job and it will probably never do. And having business website with spelling mistake won't look professional.

  • Definitively you will increase traffic, but it depends mainly on your niche, service or product. Previously you need to study the market to find the most profitable countries within your industry. Some times having a multilingual site does not mean exactly to translate it, but to write new content considering the culture and several aspects of your target. For example, If I'm localizing (translating your website) using some religious anecdote to sell something (lets say your company sells holy bullshit) I wont use the same content for Israel than for Saudi Arabia or Italy, that's the difference between localization and translation. This is an advantage since if you find a good manager for these languages you wont need to translate always, and can choose between translation and content writing.

    That is entirely dependent on the scope of the company.

    For a multinational company like DELL for example, having multiple language options on their site is mandatory.

    In my case, my site caters to English speaking visitors. I previously had a Google Translate WordPress plugin on my site - but it did not have any impact on traffic - so I deleted it.

    Multilingual website help you target your audience effectively. Moreover, it ranks better in local search results. Though google translation is common but it is not that efficient in converting one language to other and convey the right meaning.
