Adobe Photoshop cs2 help please...

I've downloaded Adobe photoshop cs2, to create 2d ebook covers. I have found most tutorials on YouTube to be next to useless for a beginner. All I want to do is add a few colours (layers) to the cover and a bit of text.

I have a basic template already. Any advice/suggestions please... that won't cost me anything.

      Finding a good tutorial that shows me clearly how to edit (background/colour/text) an existing ebook cover template I have - I've never used p/shop, or any similar software before. About.com is the closest so far, in terms of clear instructions & vids, but they seem to cover everything (photos) except what I need!
