...to create a stand-alone forum from one that is attached to a smaller website?

I am hoping that one of my discussion topics sites takes off, and if it does, I may want to upgrade from a Wordpress template to a more sturdily coded, higher end stand alone site.

Is it possible to do this while keeping past and ongoing posts?

Thanks in advance.

All this is possible to do with WordPress but you must make sure to anticipate the growth and start this kind of project on a scalable infrastructure from the start.

Now, WordPress is the PLATFORM on which one can run a website in the form of a BLOG and can also be used to PUBLISH all kind of content out of the box. You can also create all sorts of membership and ecommerce website with all the bells and whistle you can imagine with all kinds of plugins and yes that exists for creating forums within WordPress as well.

It is also possible to run a forum as a standalone app outside off WordPress while being connected with your WP, but that will require a slightly higher level of technical knowledge.

For keeping past and ongoing posts, you must understand that you must keep the WordPress platform on which you have built your content over time. While you could move to another platform (I cannot see why you'd want to do that), you are also heading to a lot of trouble and risks of loosing a lot of ranking for your pages as well if the URLs are not kept intact in the platform transition and that could be a nightmare...

    Cheers!
