Installing Wordpress Thesis Theme Question

I understand I'm supposed to upload the Thesis folder somehow into my hosting account. I use Hostgator. The problem is I can't just add the entire folder to (I don't think) to wp-content/themes. It makes me upload one by one, and there are so many files that I'm sure I'm doing it wrong. Am I supposed to add just a certain file? I'm clicking on File Manager, then www...then I go to wp-content/themes and click upload. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Rather than adding it via your cpanel, why not try uploading it via your wordpress dashboard..

    Go to APPEARANCE

    ADD NEW THEMES

Then look at the top for

    UPLOAD and click it

Then as long as the theme is in a zipped folder you can upload this way, if it is not, go to the theme itself and right click it to send it to a compressed zipped folder.

Once that is done, back in the dashboard upload area, click BROWSE to navigate to where the now zipped theme file is and select it, you should then see it fill out the empty field next to BROWSE, when that is done, click on INSTALL NOW.

If the install works correctly you can then activate or preview it from that screen/area of the dashboard, or navigate to APPEARANCE/THEMES and preview it from there.

    Hope that helps.

  • What computer are you using, and what ftp service or product?
There generally should be no reason why you shouldn't be able to upload an
entire folder using any of the graphical ftp products, like the free filezilla (which I believe runs on mac, windows and linux.)

Feel free to contact me if you have further questions.
  • I'm not sure what an FTP is, but I'm not using one I don't think? I just log into my hosting sites admin area. Then I go to the File Manager (is that an ftp?) and navigate to the themes folder. I'm following these instructions, but again, am forced to upload one file at a time.

  • You won't be able to install Thesis via the WordPress admin screen because it's a premium theme and not on the WordPress site.

You should definitely do this via FTP to ensure that you get all the files tansferred correctly.

Google FileZilla and download/install it onto your PC. It's very easy to set up - there are directions towards the bottom of this page:

... and directions on installing a theme manually here:

    • Martin I was not suggesting the OP use the Wordpress Admin screen to try and install from the wordpress site, I was suggesting using the "Upload" function that the wordpress admin screen also has to upload a theme that you already have on your hard drive.

However, I do think OP should follow your instructions and use an FTP, so much easier

  • the way i do it via FTP is go to the wp-content/themes folder in the FTP program, go back to my the file you want to upload and drag it over to the wp-content/themes folder. then it just begins uploading everything in the folder. once it is finished, in wordpress, go to appearance -->themes, and it should show up. (if you are already at the page, once it finishes uploading, refresh the page)

i think you might be inside the theme folder trying to upload the files individually. don't go inside the folder, simply drag the entire folder over.

premium themes should not be any different in the way you upload it. it is just a theme you pay for.

i would highly recommend an FTP client for day to day use. it simplifies everything and saves time.

  • FTP worked like a charm. Now I just have to adjust the look and get things going! I have no idea how to add pictures? Ha. One down, more to come.

    • using the editor, there is a button to add an image, and you can upload an image from your computer.

otherwise you can add one to the php file (in your favorite text editor) using html and the relative path to the image ( ../images/file.jpg) etc
    • By the way, you should install the plugin "thesis openhook" if you havent already. The new thesis 1.6 lets you modify the actual files itself, pretty powerful! Great list srhudson, I just love to play around with my thesis theme haha.
  • Glad to hear you got it installed, here are some sites I found while I was struggling with the whole Thesis learning curve. Hope it helps!
