How do I gain website development clients?

Hi, I am currently studying web designs by learning how to code. I can do awesome design work in wordpress and am learning how to build from scratch.

However because I'm a newbie it's really hard to find a good paying client, they all want it for free or way under my quotes. I feel my rates are reasonable and am willing to work within their budget. I just recently lost my job and I desperately need to find a client or I can do affiliate marketing but that isn't working out too well.

So please advise what I should do, I have no money to invest in ads or anything like this. thanks

    Stop looking at the payment. Accept all work assignments that PAY until you have established your business. Refusing low-paying jobs means the person isn't desperate for money. If you don't have any other source of income, it makes sense to get paid low rather than not getting paid at all.

      There are several good threads about this in the offline sub-forum.

      One good way is to be active on linkedin.

      You can sell to those who do not have one or to those who do. The first group would be harder to convince.

      The easiest to sell to are those who are spending money on advertising and have sites that, if improved, would convert better.

      Which brings me to: do not sell websites, sell a way to make more money.

      Story of mine: years ago, before I had a site, I was approached by 2 developers:

      #1 showed me beautiful templates, and I was impressed;

      #2 showed me nothing but asked me what I wanted my site to do, talked about it being part of my sales force.

      First one wanted $3000; 1 year hosting and domain were included;
      Second one wanted $900 + $250 a month forever, hosting and domain were included as long as I paid, so was site maintenanceance. Back then, hosting and domain cost 80 or 90 a year, together.

      Also, #2 talked about how was I thinking if getting people to my new site. ((Had not given it a thought, being, at the time, of the build-it-and-they-will-come camp of stoopid.

      Can you design logos, write copy, do SEO? They would help you. If not, learn or pair up with someone whi does.

      Which brings me to:
      Craigslist.

      Search for web developers and marketing agencies that advertise there. Contact them and ask if they could use a web developer.

      Another thread here on this very topic: https://www.warriorforum.com/offline...sign-fast.html

    Getting the first gig is the most difficult. Then on, it gets a tad easier as you have work to show. If you have friends in the business, offer to do their work at a lower price. That would free them up to take on more work. You can start and eventually get bigger projects.

    1. You need to run away from people who want your service for free because there is no such thing as free lunch. Also, dont ever undersell yourself.

    2. Try to create your profiles on platforms like Freelancer, Upwork, PeoplePerHour, etc. This must help you set a balanced streamline of money each month.

    3. Either you are going to be a web developer or affiliate marketer. So, I suggest you to work on your skills whichever you think is best of out of the two then work on it even more and keep adding skills. Keep learning.

    It is difficult to get the first job due to the lack of experience and testimonials. It gets easier with every new gig.

    Build your own email list. If the people who follow you opt-in to your site, you have a list of potential clients who are familiar with you, and trust you. And ultimately it's these people who are the best potential clients.

    Upwork and Fiverr are bottom of the barrel sites. They're like dating apps, which I've also never used. Those sites are purely transactional these days and not for relationship building. I know freelancers who started out that way years ago, but that doesn't mean that's the way to start out today.

    If you start building an email list, you'll have to create some content here and there, and it'll take work and some time. But cold emailing and chasing after prospects is work. If it's going to take time, you might as well work smarter and not harder.

    You can advertise your website skills by writing content or display some demos on the niche websites. This would be very helpful for you to gain clients for your business.

    Three things I did when I got started as a web designer a couple of years ago.

    1) I looked up the newly started businesses in the area and Googled to see if they had a website. If they didn't I sent them a regular mail with my services and then I followed up with a phone call about a week later. That's how I got my first website gig.

    2) Google different local niches such as carpenters, auto dealers, accountants etc and look at their websites to see if they could benefit from a new websites. Also check if they are doing any Google Ads. If they do that means they know the value in marketing online and also have a marketing budget.
    3) Look in the local newspaper to see who's advertising and then look at their website.

    Ps. Learn some basic on page SEO. That will increase the value of your services. A lot of business websites has crappy SEO.
