How to Blur part of an image like in this example

Hi,

How do I blur part of an image like in this example so that it looks better when I want to put text on one half of it?

BTW I'm using Adobe Photshop CS2 if that helps.

  • Can't give you step-by-step right now, but there are 2 ways (at least) to do this:

    1. Select the area & use one of the blur filters
    2. Select the area & fill with a gradient

    Both will take a little experimentation to get what you want. The first technique is easier, but if the background is too dark for your text (or vice versa), you'll have to do more work.

  • Photoshop for sure. Anything to do with bitmaps (JPG, GIF, PNG, TIFF etc.) is all Photoshop unless there are some very specific reasons not to. Illustrator is your friend for vectors.

    Re blurrr....

    There is also a Blur tool in the toolbar. You can select that, jack up the brush size and pressure and get jiggy with your mouse on the image where you want the blur effect.
  • Still can't get it to work right.

    Perhaps blur isn't the tool I need here?

    Any other suggestions please?

    • attatch your image psd file or just the image in jpg format and I will do it for you...........let me know how much you want blurred and where.

      You need to use a layer mask or the eraser with a new layered white background behind the original image......
  • Use a mask in photoshop

    Search Youtube, there are lots of video tutorials on how to do this.
  • you can achieve something similar to what is in that image by adding a radial gradient in a new layer above the base image , then hold ctrl and left click the thumbnail for the gradient layer in the layer manager. In the toolbar at the top find the feather option, enter a value here from 0 and upwards. depending on the size of the image a number between 5 and 20 usually does the trick. then with the marquee tool selected right click the selection in the canvas and use option: new layer via copy. Hide the original gradient layer.

    oh forgot to mention, for the gradient, use foreground to transparent fill option.

    then just rinse and repeat until your satisfied (in other words, if your not happy, do it again until you are).

    • This is how I would do it
      I would use the rectangle marquee tool to select the part of the image that I want blurred out, then while selected I would add a feather to it, maybe 20 pixels, and either add a new layer and fill it (with paint bucker tool) with the color you want to be the background to be. Or you can fill it on the same layer, I recommend a new layer, its easier to get rid of the new layer if for some reason you want to delete the changes. This will give the layer a new color with blurred edges, looking like it was blurred out.
