Interested in decentralized social media

I want to start the push forward for decentralized social media. With the egregious censoring and banning that we're seeing on Twitter and FB, I think it's really important for the integrity of all countries. I'm looking at different options and so far the best option appears to be https://Mastadon.org but in order to start your own community or 'instance', as they call it, you have to set up your own server. Can someone educate me on how difficult setting up and maintaining something like this would be? Would managed hosting be a good option? Thank you.

    This guy has some awesome stuff on setting up a server. I don't personally know him but I know he has a Udemy course on how to set up a server.

    Side note. I like your honest posts and email marketing and not wanting to push scammy junk on people. I should have built a list years ago (just starting...not sure why) but I don't want to sell junk just for a profit.
