Manually editing the lastmod date in XML sitemap?

I have a question about the lastmod tag in the XML sitemap of a Wordpress page. Wordpress allows you to backdate your posts. So, if I published a post in 2020 and backdated it to 2015, does the lastmod tag in the sitemap shows the true date of 2020 or would it show 2015? And if it showed 2020, can I manually edit it to the 2015 date?
