out of the top level extensions you list, i would go with a .net domain name or a .us if your living in the USA.

.org domains are usually used by organizations that are none profit. But i say this loosely, because that is not really the case these days. But originally the .org was created for that purpose.

.org is really for non profit type websites. .net would probably be your second best choice, but really i would stick with a .com and just try and find a similar domain, just keep brainstorming!

I agree with Sylviad... the type of business can make all the difference. What are you going to use the site for? For SEO, keywords in the domain name are a plus, regardless of the extension.

I would go with the .net first, .org second and .us as the last option.

Between .org or .net, just pick what sounds better to you. It really doesn't matter what their intended use was.

    Hello Amoeba,

I think .net is the best choice, second to .com . It does not do any harm your advertising towards it.

I always use .net if .com is not the option.
But I've gotten used to .net so much that basically it's all that I use.

I much prefer .org, as in:

craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums

Without a real study we don't know what performs better for SEO. But I have heard that .org out performs even .com in G's eyes. This has been my personal experience also.

Look at #24 on this list of G ranking factors. It says .edu, .gov and .org are given high status.

  • Go with the .net

Not that I think it really matter that much these days unless you need ppl to remember the domain. It doesn't make a difference as far as Google searching goes.

I honestly haven't read what other people here said BUT I would recommend get a .com because it is the most popular TLD.

Now you said that the .com is not an option in this case as it is already taken. You now have three options

    1. Get the .net domain as it's really your next best choice for that domain.

    2. Look for a new domain name, when people type in a domain they almost always put in .com instead of .net or .org, so this may be a better option if your expecting a lot of type in direct traffic.

    3. Go to Domainr, the domain name search engine and find your domain with a new tld.
ie. www.revise.com is taken, but www.revi.se is available.
The downfall of going this route is that most of these cool tlds are country tlds, and from what I here they rank higher in those countries than they would in lets say America.

    Hope this helps!
p.s. please use full words in a post

In my experience the only extensions that get consistent results are .com, .net and .org

I've found that the other extensions just languish away in low traffic land.

My preference, based on what I've found works best, is the same as above. Try for the .com, if you can't get it go the .net, third choice is the .org and if none of those are available go for a different domain.

If it's your main business website, try as hard as you can to use .com (look for a variation on your name using my favorite site: domai.nr. It'll make a big difference when you're telling people at conferences and such that your site is blah.com.

If it's for a product site, landing page, etc., it doesn't really matter since people will be coming from a link. Got with .net or .us. and be done with it.

      Hi,
if you are selling anything on your site you should have a .com address this is a commerce extension.
if you are just using the site to relay info etc .net is fine it just demonstrates your on the web but not an ecommerce site

.org is still refernced as non profit organization and i do not advise using it at all unless you are one.

For personal sites you can use your country extensions such as .us.ca etc
this tells people you are in Canada or the US and some people only deal with sites in their own country.

If .com is not available for one it is always a good idea to have at least 3 ideas for names relevant to your site just in case one is not available.

      have a merry Christmas.

I think ".net" extensions can be very useful for some organisations especially where they have the word network in the names. This is easy to remember as it is an abbreviation or acronym for their name, and in such cases is probably a better than the more popular ".com" or ".org".

I'd just like to point out that because the exact DomainDOTcom is not avaialable does not necessarilly mean tha a DOTcom cannot be used.

Many times adding a very general and short word before or after may be acceptable... such as bestYOURCHOICEDOTcom, yourYOURCHOICEDOTcom, etc...

Or, depending on keyword research maybe if you are an affiliate marketer, choose a good keyword for SEO as the DomainDOTcom to attract traffic.

As you have stated the question, I'd agree with those who answered .biz or .net deending on the type of site you have.

.com is always the first choice. It depends upon the niche of the website you are building. .org is for an organization. So stick with .net or .us if you are in US. Hope this helps.

A domain name should be easy to remember, recognize, and spell. The .com extension is still the gold standard.Would first like .net After .org.

.net is providing very good business.

Google gives more status to .org,.gov,.edu sites as they usually belong to non-profit organizations. Next place goes to .com followed by .org and others. So choose .net if .com is not available. Of course if you choose other extensions, you can see your site in top position. But if it is .com/.net, it would be SEO friendly and you can see your site in shorter period.

Dont go for any, was .com is dominant and they will steal your lime light constantly. If your website was chocolate.net and there was .com, you would lose out in the SERPS

First I'd recommend coming up with another domain name that is available in a .com. Without a doubt .com is easier to rank and it's easier for your prospects to remember.

If you absolutely have to go with .net and then .org. Don't use .org if you plan to sell something though, because it's generally for nonprofits and other organizations.

Don't even go to .us unless you have something really catchy and cool like Del.icio.us.

For me .com, .net, or .org not the big issue. Most import is the keyword in the domain itself that make sense to google. I have seen website with .info in #1 SERP. There are other factors to make up your site rank high in google.

I would prefer .net over both .org and .us.

I havn't really seen some "proof" of who of them are easiest to rank with. People just have opinions.
The same goes for .info vs .com. Most people feel that .com is better, but again no "proof".

Maybe a summer project will be to try to find this out by ranking the very same sites with different tld.

.com is probably a bigger issue to me than others it seems. For myself, I always tweak the domain name until the .com was available. I feel the other extensions are labeled 2nd class citizens by google and my customers. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!
