I will be using hostgator for hosting, unless your give a reason not to. I setup my last blog using wpdirect but feel I can do better on my own with the right information.

First go to Fantastico and install Wordpress.
Just click Wordpress --> install and you are done.

Plugins you need:

- Google XML Sitemaps
- HeadSpace2
- All in One SEO Pack

If you want forms there are some more to use, just let me know.

  Thesis should not be used by newbies. Newbies have had to hire people to help them with Thesis unless the newbie in question is technically inclined.
  
  I know. I was hired by a couple of owners of Thesis.
  
  So my advice to a newbie WordPress blogger is this: keep it simple!
  you don't have to pay for elegance. There are free magazine-style WordPress themes which are simple for a newbie to use. Spend some time at WordPress.org/extend/themes
  The reason is this: the themes there do not get accepted by WordPress.org without passing strict compatibility rules. In other words, if you have a self-hosted WordPress blog, you can even browse the themes from within your WordPress admin, and you know they will work, and they are simple one click installs just by clicking Appearance-->Add New Themes
  
  Don't get me wrong, DIY Themes/Thesis, and other commercial themes that are out there are great! It's just that it's been my experience that some of the more robust commercial themes are far from newbie-friendly.

  Looks like you got good info on WP. I used Hostgator once and my site was down so many times and up to 7+ hours. Their support wasn't any better. I've been using Hostmonster without a hitch for over two years, their phone support is top of the line. In their cpanel they have a lot of software under "Simple Scripts". You can have a WP, a PHPBB forum and Joomla up an running in mins.

In the admin panel of HostGator you could go to Fantastico and it will have a one-click install of WordPress. It's fully automatic. Once it's installed, you can go into your WP admin and set up your theme. If you want to create your own theme, Artisteer is a great tool for that. But there are lots of very unique themes that are available all over the internet for free (and a lot of paid ones too) so you may want to check out some existing themes before spending time on creating your own. Headspace2 does pretty much the same thing as All in One SEO but it also has some extra options for tracking and memory usage. I would also recommend an XML sitemap plugin, a stats plugin that feeds in data from Google Analytics, WP-SuperCache plugin if you expect to have a lot of visitors, and a database backup plugin so that you don't lose your whole site in case something happens to your database (like a hacker or something). There are some other cool plugins but it all depends on what you want to do with the site. Check out WP's plugins page and take a look at some of the most popular ones to see if you need them on your site. If you're into SEO, the Thesis theme is what I would recommend. However, it's not especially attractive so if visual design is more important to you or if you're not very good at customizing HTML/CSS/PHP then you'll probably want to go with something else.

Save some time and hire a guy on scriptlance to show you how to do it in 30 minutes for less than $20. I just hired falconeye849 who is now a warrior to fix my custom blog I bought from someone else here on the forum. It took the guy I bought it from over 30 days to fix a few things. Falconeye849 did it in under 2 hours and took me step by step how to do it for 90% less money than another warrior quoted me! Just my 2 cents.

You may want to use WP Themes , these are built in to the blog and save time creating one. On plugins, All in One SEO is top, also Caffinated Content - Gets auto content for your blog is another

There are some guys in the Warriors for Hire section that will do it for a very reasonable price. I think it's better to pay a couple of bucks to have someone do it for you than to spend all that time figuring it out. You should be using your time for higher priority tasks.

Work on building your site and building traffic. Just use a free template and some plugins.

Learn to build traffic before you try to make it pretty.

all the info given are really useful to setup your first wordpress.org blog and once you have set it up...update the post regularly and try to work on link building.
