How to handle HTTP "Domain name not found" errors on new site?

I purchased a domain a few days ago, and put up a basic WordPress site with a few Pages, and submitted the sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools.

I guess the site was previously owned, as I have 3 backlinks already, which I didn't create, and also a bunch of Crawl errors (on Webmaster tools)! The "not found" errors are pages on my site which don't exist (and I don't intend to create) so I redirected those to my homepage, is that a good idea?

I don't know what to do about the "HTTP" errors . . . 14 URL's which don't exist on my site (and which I won't be creating), should I just redirect those to my homepage too? What are they, as they are presumably different to the "not found" URL's which are incomming links from other sites, I understand those, but what are HTTP errors ? Google has downloaded the Sitemap but not indexed any of my pages, so are they errors which were on the old domain (nothing to do with me) but Google hasn't re-crawled my new site so doesn't know those URL's don't exist any more??? In which case should I ignore them until Google crawls my site?
