Question about longevity and security of Word Press?

When I look at word press sites I see the words: "this site is powered by word press"

What do they mean it is powered by word press? Does that mean that word press is data base driven? If so, if the word press company went
out of business due to a nuclear attack or another reason beyond our comprehension then our web site would disappear since word press has control over it?

Let me give you a comparison, I have a web site building kit and it is stored on my computer. Let us say I am living in South America, and my web site is hosted in Singapore. If an attack occured in the U.S. that brought down all electricity and my web site was not database driven by a company located in the U.S. then I would be protected from my web site going down by having full control over ftp upload via the site building kit stored on my computer and by having my web site hosted in Singapore.

The bottom line is: If I had my web site powered by word press would I have the same control and security over my web site in the case of a nuclear attack in the U.S. as I would if I had my web site files on a web site building kit on my computer in South America with full control over ftp upload and my site hosted in Singapore?

I know I may draw some criticism from those who like to cause trouble on this forum but remember, no one ever dreamed 911 would happen and it did. IT PAYS TO BE PREPARED.

    Hi Dave,

    WordPress is two things.

    1. WordPress.com is a business that lets people create blogs for free. The company hosts these blogs and there are some limits on what can be done with the blogs.

    2. WordPress.org is an open source release of the blogging software that anyone is free to use on their own server and customize however they wish. Many web host providers provide a utility to install it. If not, you can add it to any host with PHP and mySQL. There's an endless worldwide community of plug-ins and advice and improvements to the code.

By default most installations using this software say "powered by WordPress." This only means that the site uses the free software that was originally made available from WordPress.org. It's easy to remove this line if you like.

The WordPress company has nothing to do with where in the world you choose to run your server. If you preferred to use a hosting company in Singapore you could certainly do that.

If anything happened to the company, people around the world would almost certainly make a new organization to continue helping each other use the open source software.

      Hi Dave

The sites you see "Powered By Wordpress" refer to wordpress.org sites - and a bit like a car being "powered by Lotus" has a Lotus engine - means that the software which is used to drive the site comes from Wordpress. These sites are run on your own server and therefore controlled (including the database) by you.

If wordpress.org went out of business for whatever reason then your site would still work - you simply wouldn't get any updates or future releases while the Company was out of business.

Now Wordpress.com is a different story - those sites are hosted by Wordpress.com and are wholly reliant on their servers being up and running.

Thanks Chris - you are obviously a much quicker typist than I am (and your explanation is probably better too! )

      Cheers!

I see you have the answer to your question but I just wondered who are "those who like to cause trouble on this forum"?

    Thanks

I was making an educated guess based on past experience on many forums because there are always a few bad grapes in a bunch of good ones. It is best that the bad ones remain silent when they have nothing constructive to contribute. Thanks for your concern Sue.

Well I certainly don't want to be labeled as a troublemaker or a "bad grape" and I'm all for disaster planning - in fact my sole WF blog post is about exactly that issue. But I couldn't help noticing that you mentioned a "nuclear attack" a number of times in your post.

Personally in the event of nuclear war I think my WordPress sites would not be my primary concern!

But to be prepared, you might consider hosting on a cloud server arrangement like Amazon ec2. That way your sites would still function even after some of the hosts were vaporized.

As for how may customers you would had left who were in a buying mood - thats another story!
