I am trying to put together my first Wordpress site. I have read all of the rave reviews here. I have hostgator hosting. I am not very website savvy, and have come from paid Weebly. The easiest website building site for me. I love Weebly. But, anyway, I am trying to put together a simple site.

How can I get rid of everything on the sidebar except "Pages"?

On my "where can I buy money tree plants?" page, is there anyway to have the products side by side...it runs down and looks horrible. I used "code" and input the html links. I did it the way I do on Weebly and it did not come out the same.

Is there any way to get rid of the names of the pages that are in the header?

I want it very simple and plan to go back and add volume to the text, but need some basic help. Any other suggestions for a newbie (not too fancy)?

  • sorry. All fixed. Typo.
  • In your WP dashboard, under "Appearance" is an item called "widgets". Once in these settings, just click and drag the items you do not want in your sidebar from the sidebar area back to the main area in the center of the page.

    This would be much easier for you if you installed a theme that was already laid out the way you would like. Have you looked at using a different theme?
    This is likely controlled from the settings specific to the theme you are using. Try looking under the dashboard section called "Settings" and look for a menu item labeled after your theme. It could even be standing along on the left hand nav column of the dashboard. If not, you could always edit the header directly by going "Appearances...Editor" and then selecting the Header.php file, but I don't recommend that if you're not comfortable editing php code.

    Well, it's all bound to sound fancy at first, but it will get easier as you learn. You really might want to look at using a different theme that is closer to what you would like to start with.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. It is so odd, the widget thingy was exactly as you described it. But it had nothing under "sidebar 1" and they still show! Then, I drug them into the place it said to deactivate them....still there. They are taunting me now!!

    The header, again, was exactly as you described it, but it doesnt show the text I want gone! Ugh!

    I thought I chose the easiest template. I didn't know they had a template designed to have amazon side by side. I need to go back and look. I was going for the easiest one for my first.
