How to Host & Embed Your Own Videos

I want to start Vlogging, and I want some videos being longer than 10 minutes. Is there a way I could just host it myself, or is there a really good (free) site for this? Or even just ask YouTube for an exception?

Thanks,
Kris Roxas

    If you decide to go the self hosted route, the JW player from Longtail has always been a favourite of mine... JW Player: Flash Video Player | LongTail Video | Home of the JW Player

      What format are the videos in? There are a lot of different ways to host them yourself. And different options on how to provide them to your users. If you want them to play, or download,etc.. And Rob has it right the JW Player is good.

        You are facing a number of challenges when you decide to host and embed your own videos. Bandwidth usage, file size, file formats, embeddable players...

        Here are some free tools you can use to overcome all those challenges:

        - Convert video to Flash video format - ffmpeg
        - Stream video - Red5
        - Embed video - Flowplayer

        However, if I were you, I would create a YouTube-channel and host my videos there and then embed them in the video blog. It will save you days/weeks/months...

          That is really for streaming videos... If your just going to host the videos you don't have to do any of that... (Camtasia style videos, do not require red5 or Flowplayer, and are already in Flash video format if you save them that way.)

          More information is really needed to give you all your options.

            Brad is definitely right here.

            About the streaming video vs. "only hosted" my only comment is that although we almost reached 2010, a lot of people still have not-so-good internet connections. Make them happier by streaming the videos. It's the right choice whether you host it yourself or use one of the many service providers available.

            But as Brad said, we need more information.

            So, what are the numbers? Estimated number of viewers, video length, resolution and so on.

          Yeah, probably. I'm just gonna go with TubeMogul and embed the YouTube videos into my blog - less hassle. I guess I'll just have shorter videos.

          Thanks so much for the input you guys! Just new to video, and all that.

      Rob, did you use the free player, or did you have to buy the license? I notice that for some reason it says that you cannot use the free player on a corporate site or a CMS (which WordPress is). Is there some technical limitation to this, or are they just trying to keep the funding coming into the project via licensing?

    You can embed some videos from megavideos or zshare. If you want to host it yourself, just download that video and save it in your hosting

    Host them yourself using strickly html
    Create a folder on your site called video
    take your video and use vlc to convert your .mp4 to a .ogg, .webm
    of the same video put them 3 videos in the video folder
    them paste this in your <body></body> section
    <body>
    <div> <center> <video width="460" height="270" controls>
    <source src="video/nb.mp4" type="video/mp4">
    <source src="video/nb.ogg" type="video/ogg">
    <source src="video/nb.webm" type="video/webm">
    </div>
    </body>
    Obviously change the nb to the name of your video

      use third party imbeds such as youtube or vimeo if possible. the minute you get decent traffic, you're either going to be paying up the roof in bandwidth or have your hosting account suspended.

      Can also try a cdn ie amazon or others... if you find your bandwidth is being used too fast.
