Landing Page or Content Rich Site?

Hi

Whilst having been round the internet for some years as a web designer building mainly cms systems I am now trying marketing and having some difficulty in regard to what type of websites I should be building.

There is one view that says it doesn't matter how the page looks, just a simple landing page with great sales copy will do the job, another view, which is the one I lean toward says the site must be content rich and sticky to get the traffic. My own thoughts are that the content rich site would be more search engine suited and easier to get the ranking for, but a lot of those single landing pages are at the top of their niches. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Travisman - thanks for the quick reply it is appreciated.

You hit the nail right on the head for me, its got to be about the niche. I have to learn to take my webmasters hat off and stop focussing on design and layout and concentrate on what I am trying to sell/promote instead. Then apply the most appropriate way in putting that information out there.

Also if I am totally honest with myself the hardest step I think for any "newbie" is to actually start doing something instead of just reading and trying to know it all before you start. So I best get out of my comfort zone and start doing.

If you're looking to build a successful business that will grow over the long term go for a quality, content-rich site with good design and production values. This will give you the edge in search and even, depending on your niche, sales.

The conventional sales letter is getting harder to rank for and is no longer as effective in some niches. It's good for younger (gullible) people and marketing niches. The marketing gurus will dispute this but I've tried about all formats to exhaustion and the sales letter is not working in my niche.

          Agree with DavidO here.

If you want the search engines to rank you well and niche customers to frequent your site, you MUST give them valuable content.

Even if we are doing a single product website, we still will do unique content and build out a blog with several pages. The front/landing/home page will be designed with calls to action to get them off of our page and on to the offer as quickly as possible, but we have found without building the whole site out, we have a harder time ranking in Google.

It has been a LONG time since we did a single landing page site. I could see how they still work fairly well in some niches (IM) if you are not worried about SERPs and are marketing by PPC or email almost exclusively.

Thanks for your in depth reply bjradioguy as I responded to DavidO this is the approach I am more comfortable with. Though having stayed up all night researching content, not sure comfortable is the correct word.

    Hi Rosemary,

These one-pagers likely have relevance to the search keyword and link juice galore. To me, it's unfair, to the search engines, it's what their algorithms are looking for.

I would love to you see you build a well-designed site and follow traditional, white-hat seo practices; including writing your own content, building your own links and relationships with other sites, all while focusing on design... that'll be YOUR differentiating factor, so you want to shine there.

In time, if you build a few links a day, write unique, compelling content, and submit well-thought out articles, you'll succeed and before you know it, Rosemary has a sustainable buisness (whereas most of those one-pages are normally fly-by night).

I'm actually in process of starting from scratch here too. First thing I had to learn: be patient; it takes time.

I look forward to seeing what direction you take!

short term - one page landing sites
long term - build massive unique content and many incoming links...

The long term strategy works for me, but it also takes alot more work...

russblanc has it right. And the extra work is definitely worth it. Cutting corners may seem quicker but if you're in for the long haul you quickly see the difference!

Bethany - that was a milestone for me when I realised that. To be honest, I am coming round to the simple landing page that builds my list. Once I have that address, then they can enjoy the best website in the world - but not until then!

Both. A content rich site will give you long term success, build your credibility, build your traffic but depending on your niche and what you intend to sell, a landing page will build your list and give you long term customers, so that you keep making money from them over and over again. Once they land on your content rich site, why not have a few landing pages with fifferent forms so that you build a list? I have both in one site and it is a wonderful combination
