Hi Guys

I am trying to get my head around wordpress. Our gym is looking to upgrade their website. It is currently just 5-6 pages of html with a contact form etc. They want a bit more functionality on it. i was looking to suggest I could do a custom WP site for them.I hear all these other programming languages being used and I wonder are they better than WP or not. I am not bad with WP but clueless on the rest of them

any ideas

I think WordPress would be an excellent choice for your application, it is versatile and would allow them to take control and update it themselves once you have it setup.

You could design (or have designed) a custom theme and with the myriad of available plugins you could offer them a lot of functionality that their current HTML design wouldn't have. And it would be up and running very quickly.

If you need any assistance with it please let me know.

The main problem with good old Wordpress is that it is made for blogs. Taking it away from the blog look takes work, but it is do-able obviously as we have seen many times.

The thing to note is that WP is only so popular lately because of IM and the average Internet marketers lack of technical knowledge. WP is great don't get me wrong, but there are so many other options!

        Wordpress will work find.

Check out ithemes.com This is not an affiliate link.

        Check out their Flexx themes.

They're not free, which is a good thing. The coding
behind the scenses is excellent. We use the Professional.

        They have great video tutorials.

The cost is $79.95 but well worth it. Be careful of
        free wordpress themes.

        Hope this is helpful.

  • I think WP is not a good choice for a good ol regular website. Let's call WP what it is...blogging software. If you want a blog site, go for WP by all means, but for a gym site, not so much. Good ol CSS / html is the way to go.

The great thing about wordpress though is that it offers a very simple CMS to let clients make changes to the website as they want. It is very easy to make a wordpress site look unlike a blog and there are numerous examples of people doing so. The other great thing is that it allows you to integrate a blog seamlessly into a site as I am doing on this surfing site in Peru: Chilled Peru ? Your ultimate Surf Peru Holiday Operator. Work in progress and we are looking for affiliates if anyone is surf related!

The other good alternative would be Joomla but for a simple 5 or 6 page site I would really recommend Wordpress.

The other option is of course static html with something like Free and simple CMS CushyCMS which would allow clients to make simple changes, but wouldnt give them the opportunity to add in new pages.

I vote for a regular HTML website for a gym. As someone mentioned, better to go with a paid theme if you do choose to do a blog. I've had a lot of trouble managing widgets on some of the free themes.

And someone here warned me about free themes but I just couldn't listen and had to learn the hard way. I am sure there are some free themes that are good....I just haven't met one yet.

Would love if anyone here knows of some easy to use free WP themes. I'd give them another try if they came with a referral.
