Member Site Questions

Most of the sites that I have previously created were basically static sites. I now want to start a new project that I have very little knowledge about, but it's something that I would like to learn. So I'm hoping that someone can offer some insight.

What Am I trying to do?

Well I want to create a product, say a teach you to shoot a rifle eBook. Obviously, I want to build a website around this product. I want part of the site to be a membership site. I can do all of that.

The big thing that I want to do, but have no idea of how to go about it is this. When a member logs in I want there to be a page where they can input their shooting scores (shots fired, targets hit, date, etc.) and then save it. On a following visit I want them to be able to add to that data so that they can track their progress, give them some shiny charts, the whole nine yards.

I'm assuming that this will involve mysql databases and the like. Does anyone know where I can find out how to set something like this up. I generally use dreamweaver to design my sites if that helps any. I'm not asking for anyone to take the time to explain how to do this, though that would be awesom, but if you could just point me in the direction of the resources to learn how to do it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Josh

  • Josh...I would go look at a site that does the same type of thing you are looking for then look at the websites source code.

Yes you will need a mix of PHP or asp.net and MySQL. There are plenty of tutorials on the web. Google away.

    Hi Josh

    Start by scanning this thread:

You should be able to find real-world experienced people who have already posted answers for most of what you'll need to know to build this.

you could probably pull this off using joomla and the joomla community builder - but it's going to take you forever to set all this up. Your looking for a community website script and a freelancer to help you customize it.

Thanks to mywebwork for posting that membership thread. What a goldmine of information.

I did want to add some thoughts to statelizards request for assistance. You mentioned that you felt qualified to set up a membership site, so I won't go into detail there. Yes, you will need to set up a database backend for your scoring interface, just as you would need to have some sort of database backend for most of the membership solutions out there.

Joomla has several different extensions available that might get you where you need to go with this without you having to pay to reinvent them. It seems to me that the scoring setup you are describing is a lot like a review function. JReviews is a very popular extension for Joomla and is very configurable to what values to include in a review. I don't know how public or private you want the scoring records created to be, I think that would have a lot to do with whether this would work or not. There are alot of plugins for JReviews and lots of people who customize it, so you would have a pool to draw from. If it doesn't meet all of your criteria, there may be another review program that does.

Take a look at the extension directory for Joomla at joomla.org and "think outside the box", as they say, for something preconfigured that may get you what you want. If there is something there, Joomla would be a good choice because of it's built in membership functions and huge extension list. You may also want to take a good look at JomSocial, which is a Joomla component extension, for your membership. I'm pretty sure it allows folks to keep their Jreviews inside their profile so that they would see their scores when they check into their account.
