Best Bulletin Board System

Hi All,

I am looking to set up and customize a new community website. I hear that Vbulletin and phpBB are among the best out there. Any other suggestions?

It would need to have some advertising and a small degree of e-commerce for registration to exclusive sections. But more importantly, it will need to be spam-free, users will be rated on the number of posts they have, and categories/sub-categories need to be displayed in an organized manner.

Also, anyone interested in taking this on as a project? Please PM me for details.

    it really depends on the scope of the site your doing. But for me i only use Simple Machines Forum when i need a standalone forum script. However VBulletin is a Great script as well.

    But if i was to setup a community based website i would go with a setup like the following:

    Install Joomla 1.5
    Install Community Builder Component or Community Builder Extended(CBE is different than CB)
    Install Kunena Forum Component
    Install IDoBlog Component (Adds Excellent Blogging tools)
    Install uddeIM component for Personal Messaging
    Install the JCE Editor (Better than those that come with Joomla)

    If you are looking to do it for free (Open Source), you cannot go wrong with phpBB or SMF. They are, I believe, the two most used bb scripts out there.

    If you can afford it and need all the bells and whistles, I have used and would recommend vbulletin. It does everything I have ever needed to do with a forum.
