Hi guys, i'm new here and need some advice. A local web design business is clueless as to seo friendly web design. I understand seo copywriting but not back end stuff, coding, etc. He needs someone independent to look at his templates, style of designing and point out the improvements he needs to make. He genuinely want to get 'up to speed' on this so his clients can do better in rankings.

Where can i find someone to critique his websites?
Or is there a list of essentials he should have?
example site: ttws com au There has been no SEO on this site at all, which i can help with, but what about the back end code and design?

thanks, Leanne

Hi Leanne and welcome to the forum

As you say you already have some SEO knowledge you probably have all the basics mastered - the use of the header (i.e. H1, H2, H3) tags and the title tag. A couple of the meta tags are also useful, although their worth to Google is the subject of debate.

The use of an XML sitemap is important, as is a robots.txt - both let you specify how the engines will crawl the site.

Ideally the site will have a CSS (table-free) design with any JavaScript in external files. CSS would also allow you to place the most important material at the top of the HTML page, even if it is not physically positioned at the top of the page.

A lot of good guidance can be found in guides to writing sites for accessibility - the same features that make a site usable by readers for the visually impaired also make it good for search engines.

Above all avoid the use of Flash in the design, and always use "alt" tags for any images.

Hope this is of some help

"Flash is bad for SEO" is too old a principle. It is not true anymore.
      And "above all"?

I have seen some other posts where web design shoppers are advised to run away if vendors suggest use of Flash. I am not sure what PLR stuff circa 1999 that comes from.

OK, If you are putting all your text content inside Flash it may be bad for search engine indexing. I think Google has gone some way in reading text in flash, but it may not be a good idea to make a full flash site at this time.

Otherwise, it is perfectly possible to use HTML on top of Flash. Flash elements on the site (like backgrounds, promotional animations etc.) can work with and complement your HTML sections. Google spiders do not halt when they see Flash code. That is a huge myth.

A whole new way of site development is here with the use of Flex or Silverlight. Web design is moving towards interactivity. And browsers have also come a long way too.

If your flash comment is solely directed to the accessibility issues though, you may be right. And that too only if main elements are wrapped in Flash. I recently read an article on how PDF inside Flash is the biggest accessibilty disaster (as in Scribd and some other online document sharing sites.)

I feel strong about this becayse I had a design mockup rejected because it used Flash animation in the header background. The customer heard from someone that Flash was bad for websites... I still dread having to dull the design for no real reason. Part of the job: the customer knows it all.
