Is it possible to redo a HTML site into a Joomla membership site and keep the URLs of old site pages? I'm trying to figure out how much work would be involved.

It's not that easy, but it can be done - the amount of work depends to a degree on how many pages you have to convert.

First you need to build or obtain a suitable Joomla template. Next you need to define all of the same "pages" as the original site had.

After that you'll need to create and edit a .htaccess file to change the URL's of teh new site to match the old one.

You may be able to leverage Joomla's "SEF Friendly" links feature to make this easier.

If you use Dreamweaver, there are extensions out there that you can install which will embed the PHP code for you in the appropriate spots. I.e. left, right, banner, breadcrumbs, etc. I can't remember what it's called off hand, but do a search for Dreamweaver Joomla 1.5 extension. You should find several of them. Good luck!
