Add a blog into an existing website - How can I include a blog without changing the rest of my site?

I have an existing Poker site (www.firstpokertips.co.uk), which I am building into an authority site on Poker strategy, tips etc.

Most of the site is pure content that I have written myself. However I would like to post regular articles, poker tips, hints etc to a blog area. My plan is to leave most of the site as it is, but to add the posts to a blog area. Using blogging software would save me a huge amount of time because it can manage the organisation of the articles under tags, dates etc.

Is it possible to add a blog to an existing site without changing the other pages?

Any recommendations or advice from anyone that has tried it would be hugely appreciated.

If it were me, I'd just move the whole site to Wordpress and set up a category to look like a separate blog. I'd preserve the existing URLs by 301 redirecting them. It doesn't look like you've got a lot of pages on the site so not too much hassle to do this.

It also has the advantage that you won't have to try and style a blog to look like your site. The whole site will be styled the same whether it's the blog designated section, or the part that looks like it isn't in Wordpress, but is. Actually the benefits are many. It's the best advice. And of course, I'd use the Thesis framework to do it.

Really? The thing is that I spent a whole heap of time and effort on the original site. That's not a good reason not to change it, but can I really get the whole site to look and feel like it is now (at First Poker Tips: Poker tips, advice and free download poker calculators) in Wordpress?

I'd be interested what others think before I do anything drastic.

  • Yes, you can. Wordpress is one of the more popular self hosted blogs, and with it, you can add a separate directory (i.e., /blog/) that will be the blog specifically, without changing the rest of your site. Just change the install directory, etc, when doing it.

    Cheers!

When configuring, tell Wordpress to put it in a different subfolder - not your website base directory, and then it should appear as a subfolder of your site.

    Hi Mike,

Yes of course that can be done without touching the actual site, a blog
can be installed in a sub-folder like yoursite.com/blog/ and being linked to
from your main sites menu. All there would be left is adapting the actual
site design to the blog's theme.

Another solution would be to convert the whole site into a blog, making
sure it still has the look and feel of your actual site and doesn't look like a
    blog only.

I do much development with the worpress platform and can help you doing
this transformation for you, plus adding much tools for SEO and Social
Network integration which are a must nowadays.

We use WordPress all the time in conjunction with another platform or website.

Most hosts even offer a 1-click install via Fantastico or SimpleScripts.

Spend a few hours and you can quickly theme WordPress to match your site as well.

Well, if you have knowledge in graphics design, HTML, CSS and PHP, maybe yes, otherwise prepare yourself for many many hours of headaches if ever
you finally come out to something...

OK. After much sweat the blog is now up and running on my site. It actually integrates quite nicely, so you'd never know it wasnt the original site. Have a look and see what you think (www.firstpokertips.co.uk/blog/)

You did a great job; although you should remove/re-size at least one of the top menu items so it doesn't push one down to a 2nd row. It looks unprofessional. Maybe on a Widescreen Monitor it looks okay, but I don't like Widescreen. I prefer standard LCD/LED 19"+ Dual Monitors instead of having one big monitor.

    Keep up the great work!

I expect to find the main sites blog in a subdomain called blog.

    example:
    Code:
    http://blogs.jetbrains.com/webide
so yours would naturally be at:
    Code:
    http://blog.firstpokertips.co.uk/

  • It looks like a lot of work went in to that. Would it not be simpler to just integrate a tumblr blog into the main site?
