I was using 5gigsdotnet. It's a cpanel and they allowed me two websites for free. It worked well and did not seem to have any unwelcome bots. I would recommend against upgrading from them as it reverts to byethost.com. Their server is corrupted and even when I complained they were unwilling to do anything about it. Just two weeks ago I purchased three years webhosting from webhostingpaddotcom . It was a very good price. It's a cpanel. So far I have been very happy with it. It works as I expect it to. I have not encountered any problems. I'm not an affiliate. I'm just trying to help. Good Luck

Depends how much your time is worth to you. Making nice websites that are relevant to your niche is no easy task. You may find your time is better spend doing marketing and promotions. You alternative is to buy a template and then adjust it to your needs. Problem with that is you may see lots of other websites that look like yours.

I always advise people to take on the tasks you are best at and leave the rest to people who do that for a living. Could the 40 hours you may spend learning to build a basic website be spent in better ways?

I guess it all depends on why you are building a website. Is it more out of personal interest and you want to learn how to build one or are you trying to start a website to make some money online? If it's to learn about web design and what is out there then you can always experiment and try out a few free website building sites.

If you don't have your own domain name you can always use wix.com to build a free one to get a taste for things or blogger if you want to start your own blog website.

If you have your own domain then you can try godaddy's free hosting and site builder but it is restricted as with most free hosting accounts and you have to purchase your domain through them. They do not use cpanel though and to be honest i believe cpanel would be the best to use so maybe find a free cpanel host.

If not, and you are really wanting to make money online then I would take Orlandos tips and get someone to do it for you so you can start making the money instead of playing around with your website design.

Learn how to do a thing or two here and there, but if marketing, promotion, traffic, whatever is your thing, worry about that and farm out the rest. The time lost in learning, or the money lost doing a poor job is not worth the headache.

However, if you really do want to do it yourself, I would personally recommend something like squarespace(.com). I haven't used them myself, but have heard lots of kick ass things about their site builder thingy, and their service from multiple sources. The last thing you want is to end up frustrated with no money because your site sucks, especially when a little planning could avoid the problems.

FYI: Webhostingpad blows like my wife used to. As cheap as it gets, and for good reason.

Learning HTML/Web Design is one thing, get a site up and running is another. I agree what has been said before me. Learn to make a website when your income is not impeded by your skill acquisition.

I'd say don't build a static site. Use wordpress blog. If you have cpanel with fantastico it's very easy to install with 1 click basically. And there are many free good looking themes you can use or you can buy a premium one if you like.

if you are going with hostgator then they have plenty of features , templates and website builders for you to use . I don't think you will need the extra software

Online businesses are exactly that...businesses!

If you don't plan on making this a serious business, don't start it because it is ALOT of work. Sure you may get lucky like the other 0.001% of online marketeers who actually make money online their first try, but chances are it will involve you putting in many months or hard work to make your online business work.

You wouldn't open a brick and mortar store with no shelves or a restaurant with no seats would you?

Online businesses are the same. Don't go at it half arsed. Invest the money if you think the business will work. If not, find a another business.

It always amazes me how people want to start online businesses with no monetary investment.

When I first started this, I was the same. It took me a long time to realize that if my websites didn't look right, or the sales text wasn't written well, the products wouldn't convert.

Once I realized to hand off the tasks that I wasn't absolutely brilliant at to others, my businesses began to flourish.

I just wish I could get all the time back that I wasted on trying to do tasks that were beyond me.

If you want to use a very user-friendly system to build a website of your own. I do recommend you to use Blog system, such as Wordpress.

It is so easy to edit & manage content, even much better than many Content Management System available nowadays.

If you are not from IT background, do not recommend you to learn HTML or photoshop design. because it is challenging for non-IT person.

I would definately go with Wordpress. Get it free using the Fantastico self installer or use a host like www.lavabug.com where they install it on sign-up for you.

Then at least you now own your own domain and hosting and have a site set up. Then go search for Wordpress themes or wordpress designers on Google and get someone to design something for you.

That way you control the site and can update it as much as you need, but you can still get a professionally designed site if you want. Plus if you take the time to learn it well, you could design your own themes.

In fact take a look at www.artisteer.com. Its a program that will allow you to design your own themes from scratch.

It depends what sort of a site you want (i.e. blog/static) and what your OS is. If you've got a Mac and you want a static, custom-designed site, I'd say you should get RapidWeaver by RealMac Software. It's a great WYSIWYG designer, and it's really easy to use. If you want a blog, definitely go for a Wordpress self-hosted one, no matter which OS you use. Just my advice.

This is what I did; I reviewed a lot of sites that I liked and a lot that I didn't. Since I needed it done quickly, I hired a person. We met and revised a few times. I agree that you need to delegate some of your tasks rather than try to learn all the aspects.

Wordpress is a great way to build a site. I use it for several of my sites. If you need help setting it up, just ask.

While I have built a few wordpress blogs without help I had never built and published an actual website. I'm a self learner so I followed some tutorials that were way to techy and got the site up but the graphics wouldn't show. I remembered coming across a free e-book that claimed it could teach you and get you up and running by 3:45 this afternoon. I thought "Yeah Right!" I was desperate so I tried it and it delivered on its message.I have absolutely no tech background and that makes what I easily learned from this book amazing. What would you do to get your hands on this?

I would go with purchasing a domain, use hostgater as your hosting company and use the wordpress platform so you have complete control over your website.

Joomla is decent. You can find some pretty nifty templates for free, or pay if you'd like something a little more elite.

You can use template generators. there is a lot of them on the web. Some are free some are paid. You can invest one time fee into web generator to save money on design services that might cost you huge money.

I agree too-Wordpress is very easy and there is only a couple day learning curve. You may want to try Moonfruit.com That is a WYSIWYG editor and takes a little getting use to, but one of the best for non-technical users.

I am coming in after a long list of replies. It depends what type of website you want to build. The suggested WordPress route is perhaps on of the best ways and will help you to get noticed by Google quicker and move you up the rankings compred to a basic non-WordPress site.

If you want to build affilate type websites for promoting products then I suggest a recently launched website builder that will make building your own websites a doddle.

It is subscription based but when you consider how many websites you can produce in a month using this software compared to having one built for you, it is a real steal.
