Would my site really be worth £97?

I have created this website design: http://www.life-changing-products.info/DG1
(It says £98 in the title, but I ended up using £97 instead!)

£97 was just a ballpark figure, I have no idea what I should charge for creating and setting up this website for someone.

Is it a fair price? Should it be lower/higher?

Any input would be great

    Hi,

I'd probably say that it's a little on the high side for a relatively simple template. There are a lot of more visually appealing ones available for a lot less than that (I'm thinking commercial templates here). They're priced anything from $20 - $65 at the major players in the template marketplaces.

In terms of pricing for services (there's a big difference) your rates are possibly on the low side.

If you're getting started in the site creation business, could I suggest you have a look at using ready made templates and charging for customising rather than creating them from scratch in the beginning? It'll possibly get you started faster.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi SamstaUK,

A bit of friendly advice would be to teach yourself XHTML/CSS and learn to code designs from scratch, these types of 'Spliced' websites are very difficult to update/change by anyone that you would possibly sell to and would damage any reputation you could have as a designer.

£97 is probably a bit much. Pages from a template shouldn't be that much.
Just a few suggestions for your example page..
Put some Lorem Ipsum (example text) with a few articles
Actually put a little bit about you.. not just an I coded some stuff when I was 14
maybe put.. I am an individual focused on xxxx, with your satisfaction of utmost importance blah blah.. I have been doing webpages for X, and I am experienced in coding X.
I would also explain why the consumer would pick you instead of doing it for themselves.. This page doesn't seem all that complicated, and looks like something that can be..

I would also pick a different color scheme for your showcase page.. grey on grey isn't going to attract many.

I agree with learning xhtml/css first. Your site is coded using tables, would be better (actually should be better), if the site were tableless. And the use of iframes isn't really recommended.

As for the whole package, £97 is too much for a simple site with not much graphics.

  • Hey there....

This advice isn't meant to be offensive but...

You shouldn't be selling this website theme to anyone. It's a table based layout which is outdated.

I doubt anyone will pay anything for a Photoshop image slice conversion that isn't coded correctly and doesn't have any CSS.

Even from a design aspect the theme isn't marketable. The graphics are very subpar and color scheme makes me depressed and want to cry.

Some advice....you obviously want to make some extra cash but this may not be the right approach. Consider learning how to code properly using CSS and offer custom services after you have created some nice looking designs.

Show us a nice design...I know you can do it!

    Good luck.

Are you kidding? This looks like crap, both the design itself and the markup. It's not even valid, ever heard of a doctype?

Unless it is 1995, and you really can't do any better...don't bother. Any designer with even a smidgen of experience, even a novice who read a book, should be able to make that site in notepad with no tools in under 10 minutes...and it will validate. Three divs (oh, I'm sorry, table cells) and an UL does not constitute a design, period. Oh wait, even the UL isn't an UL, more table cells...

Well, we all have to start somewhere and you have done it! Way to go! It was brave of you to put this out for comment. Here are my suggestions:
      • If you're serious about wanting to develop website, you do need to know how to properly code using CSS. This business is fast paced and the norms change quickly, but predictably. Having been developing websites since 1995, I know it takes a lot to stay on top of it.
      • Buy a recent book on HTML and CSS. Take the time to work through it.
      • Look around the web and find some sites that strike you as amazing. View the code (click on VIEW > PAGE SOURCE in your browser). See how they did it. Learn to dissect other sites (but don't copy them . . it's a copyright violation). Ask yourself what you like about the site. . . what you don't like about the site . . what makes the site work
      • Consider taking a web design class at your local community college or tech school
      • Volunteer to do a website for friends, family, small business.
      • If you want to market your own template and your own services, search the web to see what the competition is doing. See how you can do it better or in a more unique way.
One of my favorite online resources is Flash, Fireworks, ColdFusion, Freehand and tutorials for Dreamweaver MX They provide terrific tutorials on a variety of areas in website design and development. They are focused on using ADOBE DREAMWEAVER and other products (which are primo). You can purchase many Adobe products inexpensively if you are a student (Adobe )

People are more and more web savvy. You won't be able to sell nothing for somthing, but you when you develop a worthwhile product or service, you can market it and make money. I have for 15 years. If I can do it, you can do it.

      All the Best

Okay, the first idea was probably a pretty bad one.
What if I made this sort of layout for Blogger/Wordpress/DotNetNuke/etc: http://i43.tinypic.com/e6oiyr.jpg

Then configured the CMS for the customer, and put the content on the website for them?

    (Thanks WillDee for the suggestion!)

    Hello,

This is my suggestion, have a look on the hot selling wordpress theme here:
    Popular Files - ThemeForest

Try to make something like that, or just buy the theme and providing the customize solution for your customer. It would be a lot more easier than you create one from scratch.

Best thing to do is tell them you will setup the website and use a template but will customize to there liking. Sell them on you setting up the whole thing and changing out graphics and text, setting it up on the server etc.

You dont need to design or code anything from scratch, unless it is something really custom. And tell them you can get them top rankings in search engines
