I'm trying to learn how to do this myself.

You can make slices in photoshop and use them in dreamweaver (somehow, I'm not quite sure how yet. There are some free sites that will do it. Or show you how.

  • I don't know if they are using software to do this. Most of this companies I imagine hand code your PSD files.

Adobe Fireworks has a slice to CSS tool. Photoshop will slice your images into a table format (not recommended as this is very old way of coding a web page), and you can try Sitegrinder which is a Photoshop plug in and will create CSS / html web pages from PSD files but there will be some browser display issues on older browsers such as IE6 with this program.

Your best bet is to learn how to code CSS the right way.

You can create slices using the slice tool. With Photshop CS, this used to be done in Image Ready, now with CS3 and CS4, it's part of Photoshop. So, depending on the version, once you've created the web site in Photoshop, you slice it up, and then save it as an html file. FTP the files to your server and you have a web site.

I don't know how the online converters work, but I do know Photoshop does work. I've used it in school and I've created some pretty cool web sites with it.

I have yet to find a tool that does this well.. I always end up to doing it myself of having another team member do it so we get the best results.. At the end of the day like anything, no real shortcut here IMO..

Saw folks on fiverr offering to code psd to html for 5 bucks.

Sitegrinder has it's flaws - but works if you aren't totally anal. You have to know photoshop pretty good though.

A little css and a few days practicing will blow you away with what you are able to do though. Plenty of css frameworks to speed things up as well.

If you can't slice and code a PSD, you shouldn't be using a framework anyway, it will just hinder any real learning and cripple your understanding.

Slicing a PSD and coding it into valid (x)html and css is a basic design skill, and pretty easy to learn with a little practice.
