Help wanted, Quick Install WP Error!

Alright, I just got a hostgator account for my domains, and want to use wordpress for the sites. I used the "Quick Install" in cPanel, clicked on Wordpress, and I got this error message.

"Error: The chosen directory must be empty or non-existent before installation can proceed."

Anyone understand why it would say this?

Ok, now it says it installed it, so I go back into "Quick Install" and up to Manage Installations. It displays that Wordpress is currently installed to the site. So then I click on it, it asks me for blog title and email, and then has a button on the bottom that says Install Wordpress (but I thought I just installed it!) Then I click on that, it gives a huge page of error messages, but then at the very bottom it says "Success" and gives me the username and password info, with a button underneath that says "Log In"

What do I do after that? I hit the button and all that happens is that I'm returned to the same page that asks me for blog title and email, and then has a button on the bottom that says Install Wordpress! So I just keep going around in circles!

Edit

Ok, problem solved. I got on chat with tech support and he had to change some files around. That's one thing out of the way, now off to whatever else!

  • Glad you have that resolved!

To be honest with you, I prefer manually installing Wordpress on servers, rather than using Fantastico. This gives me control over what's going on

    • Totally agree with that! I have had several clients in the past because they could not get into their sites after using Fantastico (and after they have tried several times) so you get two or three half done installs, it so much easier to see what is going on and where it is going on using an FTP!

  • Thanks for the responses, everyone. Well, I'm considering going with FTP the next time; I'll look into that. Yeah, one thing that's bad about the way it is right now is, I think anyway, that it IS installed in the web root directory, because of the tech support guy having to switch things around. I had a bad feeling about it, but didn't want to pressure him anymore since there didn't seem to be a way around it, due to the glitch they were dealing with.

I hope it doesn't cause any issues, but once I learn more, I can just go in and redo it anyways, hopefully.

    Once again, thanks.
