One simple thing you can do without redoing the theme is to create a hierarchy. Meaning make the headings of the articles which look a shade of red? and make them not blend in with the articles themselves.

You want to direct your visitors attention, you want to make the page flow in a certain direction and that direction is up to you. It can be done by using hierarchy. Font sizes, bold lettering, different color choices ect... the basic idea is to lead their eyes whereever you want them to go with visual design elements.

It helps give the eyes direction. The reason people may be leaving is because its not easy on the eyes and a bit busy, they are not being told where to go visually so they get lost in the page with no direction, by simply adding some darker color maybe even black titles on your articles you can make it seem less busy and more organized.

You can also change the page bg, to a solid color, maybe white, or some shade of white, that will tone down the busyness.

Just suggestions before you go changing the whole theme.

    Thank you both.
I will try to change the background first and create a hierarchy.

Changing your theme shouldn't affect much. Just take note that the new theme should have similar <h1>, <h2>, <h3> sections as the previous theme. These tags have a certain weightage in SEO and they should be applied in the same manner in the new theme, if possible.

Changing themes will definitely not effect you - at least not retroactively.

I am 98% sure your rank will stay the same. The title of your page and the backlings are probably the main reasons why your site hast he rank it has, and this will not change by changing the theme.
