Basically, a web site could mean anything....simple presentation website, static only with some pictures and text, but it could also be very complex, with high interactivity, users, etc.
A wordpress blog is a type of website which focuses on content and text. It is a CMS ( Content Management System ), and you can edit it very fast and it`s easy to add new content/text, you don`t need any coding knowledge

Listen up mate if you are looking for traffic from google then let me tell you wordpress is the most loved CMS of google. It is 5 times easier to do seo for wordpress blogs rather than doing for website.

If you use wordpress in nice manner then you can generate huge traffic. But if traffic is not in you'r requirements then you better go for website.

I may have to disagree with your statement claiming easier seo for wordpress compared to plain static sites.

My html sites are actually ranking better than my wordpress sites but I'm not generalizing I'm just stating that there isn't so much difference between ranking html sites vs wordpress sites. In fact, plain static websites are loading faster for me so that's one major advantage.

If you're a newbie though, wordpress may be the best way to go. There are tons of free themes available for you to use so you won't have to design your own site. You can post content with absolutely zero knowledge in html or css. And there are plugins that can make certain functions easier to achieve.

But if your client only requires a few pages and will not be updating frequently (or not at all), you may want to consider static websites ( you can use either html or php includes). There are also various free html templates available.

For all intense purposes, seeing as how you admitted you are new...perhaps running your own tests to see what works best for you. Put up both wordpress site and a static site. Watch them for say a couple of months and track them. Do share your conclusions when your done

I agree with you that static pages will load faster and it helps them in getting indexed faster. But to my experience once the wordpress home page gets indexed then later for every post of wordpress I mean almost every post it gets indexed within 5 to 10 minutes of posting. This has worked for me not sure about you.
And many experts says wordpress is most loved CMS by google. The reason was already given by senderbot in this thread.

    Hi,

The main difference between a blog and a website is that a blog is supposed to be a series of updated day by day posts that are in reverse chronological order (ie the latest post comes first).

Websites in comparison are plane static pages that dont change often. Wordpress is software that was originally designed to create blogs, and that is still it's primary function.

However as Wordpress advances it has become an incredibly simple way to set up websites too. Instead of creating blog "posts" you create "pages". That is what quite often causes confusion to newcomers. They see Wordpress as a blogging software but in reality it now easily does both.

If you are new to everything then I would suggest you set up a wordpress site using a one click installer that comes with most hosts these days. Then once your site is up and running have a look at setting up Google Adwords. An adwords campaign will get you on Google fast.

Fatcow have a one click Wordpress installer and they currently have over $150 worth of free Google, Yahoo and Facebook vouchers. It will cost you $44 to sign up for the years hosting.

Once you have a site and some traffic from Adwords you can then take your time to test and tweak your site to make it come up on the natural organic search results.

    Cheers

    Max

better you use wordpress, because it has many advantages compared to websites such as the ease of managing content, providing a lot of views, as well as various other facilities that will make your job easier

  • Look at it this way. If you client needs a content-driven site, pick Wordpress as your platform with proper plugins to implement the site. If they need a transaction-driven site that involves lots of custom business logic, then pick an application platform such as LAMP to build the site.

  • Website, only because im fed up with everyone suggesting wordpress as its the easier option.

WordPress is just a website with a control pannel, which has everything already set up for you, its not as customizable as a normal website would be (if you coded everything yourself), however if you dont know anything about websites, then i suppose you dont have much choice.

I still wouldn't suggest it, because if you can make your own theme for it, then you have enough knowledge to make your own website.

I think it depends on website that your plan tobuild. If you need a web site that you rarely edit or add new content so you'd better create a static website. But if you plan to build a website that frequently changes or you often add new content so it'd better create a wordpress blog. Both are actually easy to create but for beginner it's easier to build a wordpress blog

Wordpress all the way, especially if it's for a client. WP blogs can be made to look like regular websites, but they have a 'backdoor' dashboard where anyone can log in and manage the content (CMS).

I wish I could list them here but I have dozens of websites I've built using WP and they don't look like blogs at all!

From an internet marketing P.O.V (and for a newbie to start) I would defiantly recommend a Wordpress Blog. I've seen some pretty amazing websites that totally blow me away but there are so many people that draw me in because of their blog. The reason that Social Media is so hot is because of the first word in that title "social". People connect with those that they can relate to and friendships can easily turn into buyers. (If you ask me people have lost their ability to slow down and talk to people. It seems like everyone online has their hand out waiting for you to stuff money into it.) The Internet has come a long way in the last few years and the use of a Blog gives us the chance to connect with others on a deeper level and in turn it creates repeat buyers. Yes websites have their advantages, but Worpress Blogs are:

    *Easy to install
    *Completely sets up in minutes
    *Requires no html knowledge
    *Builds relationships
*And a bunch of other cool stuff

Don't get me wrong, if you know how to write some awesome code then go for it and make a killer website but as for time and simplicity, go with the Wordpress Blog.

Wordpress is definately the way to go. It saves you so much hassle. I'm in the process of making Amazon minisites, and it's so easy with Wordpress. Within a couple of hours I can have the whole thing up and running, looking great and with the first blog post on there. You try doing that by designing your own website from scratch using HTML and see how far you get in a couple of hours.

Unless you are rich and can afford to hire a web designer, Wordpress is definately the way forward

First of all, It depends upon what you are going to create.

If you are really new to web development, Wordpress is recommended for you, so you will not have to create everything like tables, cells, bars, buttons, links etc by yourself, But if you are going to create your own website, it will take 5x time and work.

For anyone just starting I'd recommend WordPress. You can get going straight from the zip file, and you can essentially make it do just about anything you can think of with the squillions of plugins available, and if you know how to theme then you can make it look and handle just about anyway you can imagine. With a static web site you'll be pretty much locked in with your content. But with Wordpress if you dont like how its designed just retheme it

A website is static, meaning you're supposed to leave it. A blog on the other hand can be updated everyday, its like a facebook status update. Websites can be updated as well, but they're not meant to updated like a blog.

      I know it's going slightly off-topic, but...

I really hate the word "blog". I think it's the most ugly-sounding and stupid-sound word around. It's like "****" or "crap", that's how it sounds to my ears.

In my opinion, every website should have a section featuring "new updates" or whatever, so that people revisiting a site can see if anything new has been added.

Even if you don't call your website a "blog", in most cases you should still update it frequently. Information changes quickly. Google likes fresh content. But users don't like crappy blogs where people just type whatever comes into their head and don't take time over what they are doing.

Personally, I really think the word "Blog" shoudl be phased out, and the way forward is the best of both worlds. Well designed websites that get updated frequently. And that is exactly what Wordpress offers...

Wordpress Blog you can use just for information sharing. You can post you articles there and people can read it and will comment on it. So word press blogs are best to for promotion but they can never replace the website. To develop a website Joomla is the best CMS.

  • I am a big fan of WordPress, however I am having a lot of success using Concrete5 from concrete5.org it has the core in its own directory structure with a secondary file structure that you can create custom code in that never touches the core. For clients that want a simple system that is also SEO friendly like WP and without the normal learning curve I would suggest C5.

CMS systems have their strengths and weaknesses so find a couple you really like or go with hand coding depending on the project.

  • Hi Oprah_ Quincy

I'm not a newbie but I was once! And I had exactly the same dilema. I have since used websites and blogs.

Alot depends on what you are going to be using it for as other people here have said. If you have a small business (off line maybe?) and you just want a small site with general info about your company profile & products etc and you don't want to spend too much time updating it then a site would be best..

But if you are using it for marketing yourself or a product then I would go for Worpress.

We are now living in a 'Social Media' world. People love interacting with other people, getting regular updates & becoming part of a 'common interest group'. They become ' loyal' to meeting places where they find like minded people, interesting topics and valuable advise.

People also love giving their opinions ( don't we all ).

So for me, it's Wordpress, but just bare in mind that you will have to update it regularly so if you're not into all that then maybe go for a website to start.

Just a small piece of extra advise though. Its a good idea to get a basic knowledge of how to build a simple website. (you can buy ready made website templates). The basic skills you will learn here are invaluable.

For example, you might have a blog which has a link to a free -report or ebook to give away. So you will need to know simple stuff like how to upload files & images to the web so that your visitors can click on a link and access the product. It's not as hard as it sounds and there is plenty of free advise out there to help you.

Just take a look around this forum.

    Good Luck

It depends on the capabilities you are looking for but I would vote Wordpress especially if you are new to owning a website.

I spent over $2,000 for a customer CMS int eh past which was great but found that I could pretty much do many of the things with Wordpress through plugins and themes for a fraction of the cost.

Try it out and if you don't like it you can always change to a website.

    Good luck!
