Hi,

I am new here and this is my first post, so I hope it's in the right place!
I have two weight loss blogs which are not doing too well, but have plenty of content on them.
I have just found and purchased a new domain to enable me to move all the content from the two original blogs and create a new, much better site.
I am told I need to do 301 redirects.....
Great, but what does that mean?
Do I do one for the domain, one for each post or what?

Can someone please give me some advice?

Thanks.

By the way, what an amazing place this is! I could easily spend all day learning new stuff....

    hai

are you using the same platform(like wordpress) for both domains?..

that is do you want to change all contents from wordpress site to another domain which has wordpress?

are you previously used self hosted site?

      Hi,

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention.
All sites are built using wordpress on my own hosting, but the new site is with a different host.

      Thanks

I did 301 redirects before in my asp.net site but these are for the deadlinks to redirect on my main page.

If i could interject my opinion here, I would suggest that you not transfer or redirect anything. Especially if you have alot of good content already. If your blog is not performing like you want it, perhaps a good round of offsite optimization is in order.

The reason i say not to do a transfer is because of site age, primarily. Unless of course the domains are less than six months old, but if you have anything more, the new sites will not do as well.

If you do feel as though a 301 redirect is in order, to fully maximize your optimization, you will need to 301 every page of your old domain for awhile until new indexing occurs.

But really, if your old domains are not doing what you expect them to do , inject them with some good ol offsite traffic and kick those blogs in the arse!

Since you are using wordpress on the old host, the easiest way to do 301 redirects is by using the Redirection plugin there. It would not even matter if you do not use wordpress on the new host.

      Wo!
      Advice from all directions!
Thanks guys, but I think I will have to check out this Redirection plugin before I do anything else.

    Hello Infobond,
I struggled with redirecting sites for days and then I found that my domain provider can redirect any of my sites to any other site with one click of a button. It was so easy I was embarrassed. I don't know if all providers are so easy to work with.
