  • Simple...

    Domain = www.yourwebsite.com

    Hosting = internet real estate. You have to have space to site your website (usually a remote computer server), just as if you would need land to build a house on. Go check out godaddy.com or hostgator.com

    Website = You can spend weeks on this, hire a designer to help you so you can spend your time promoting your website.

    Good luck.

        Just adding to what the original poster said.

        I would advise to buy your domain from one place, e.g. namecheap.com and your hosting from another, e.g. hostgator.com but don't buy your domain name and hosting in the same place.

        As for hosting, I would go for hostgator rather than Godaddy but you could buy your domain name from Godaddy for instance. Another good host is bluehost.com.

        Also, one of the easier things for people to learn to use for making their website is WordPress because you can do so much with it, very easily and most good hosts, the ones mentioned already have a thing in your hosting panel called "fantastico" which is an auto installer which will install WordPress for you on your domain. Which means you only have to learn how to make your site (chose a theme, make posts or pages) rather than having to learn how to install the thing as well.

        And as the previous poster said, if you want a nifty looking site then you could spend months on learning how to do that and implementing it yourself so pick a designer from the Warrior Forum, there are lots of really good ones at reasonable prices and let them design a custom theme for you.

        If you need help with learning how to use WordPress, if you choose to go that way, then I do WordPress Coaching if you think that might be useful, you can check out my site in my sig if you need to contact me.

        Good luck

    I agree with Susanne, hostgator is a good place for web hosting and reasonable. They offer you some website building tools in their plans to, which is great for newbies.

    Freelancer.com is a great place where you can post a project for websites, software, marketing, anything. And you will get bids from people around to world wanting to take on your project for a pretty good price. You might be able to get your website built at a fair price by posting a project for someone to do it. You will be surprised on how cheap this can get.

    Godaddy.com is a good reliable place to purchase and manage domain names.

    Themeforest.net is a great website that offers THOUSANDS of very nicely designed templates at a very good price. (P.S Template = Site design and layout. Saving you time from having one made)

    Hope these sources help you some. I use them on a everyday basis.

    simply put, if i could chime in...
    domain = your house
    hosting = your neighborhood

    for domain reg, go to godaddy or more recently courtesy of the warrior forums I have found namecheap... for your hosting, Susanne mentioned hostgator which is awesome and I would suggest dreamhost. Who ever you decide to host with, make sure you get the most bang for your buck.

    Now about that webdesign thing...well freelancer.com is a great one, and up in my neighborhood, there is a site called dibspace that people openly barter services for services. I agree with jake's suggestion about themeforest, they have a great selection for reasonable prices. Seeing as how you are more into the marketing end of it, a quick down and dirty template or barter work might be the ticket.
    heres to your success.

    I'm a newbie too and would like clarification on why domain registration and hosting should be in two different places.

    I've heard this several times but nobody has explained why.

    Thanks!

      I don't know about everyone else, but this is why I think you should split hosting and domain:

      If the hosting company where you have the website is causing you trouble, you simply take your latest backup and upload it to another web server at another company.

      If the company where you have your domain registered is causing you trouble, you can always get another domain (not optimal but better than nothing) at another company and point it to your website.

      So, this way you're never completely depending on another company. Who knows whether they go out of business or the servers crash and so on. At least you can give away as little control of your own assets as possible.

      Does it sound rational to you?
