I'm a newbie and I want to learn to build my own web sites. Nothing fancy, but something I can use for my PPC campaigns. Any suggestions on some good training on basic web site building?

  • Why does everyone suggest that a newbie to web design should use WordPress? That's no help at all to someone that wants to learn webdesign.

What you need to do is start to study HTML / CSS, dont worry about JavaScript that the moment, concentrate on only HMTL and CSS. If you visit w3schools[dot]com, they have tutorials for everything web design.

If you have dreamweaver, you can use the split view and it should help you to learn the code as you add things via design view.

Agreed. Wordpress is a great deal more difficult to program for because of the variables and live data.

      Great tips.

Like Cr said; you should learn HTML and CSS.

Lynda.com has a lot of videos on learning about those two.

I prefer watching video tutorials and following along - It's easier to follow along.

Do you have a background in some form of programming/mark-up languages?

      HTML5 and CSS3!

If you need any help just PM!

HTML 5 / CSS3 is the future, i wouldn't recommend it now because not all browsers support it, but i suppose if you learn CSS2 you will be very close to CSS3 (afterall its not a hige jump), HTML 5 on the other hand is different, it sounds like its going to be pretty good).

Also, about Lynda.com, i was thinking of subscribing to it for a month or so during the summer, what do you think of it? Is it worth buying? (im assuming you have used it)

wordpress is the great deal for you. You can buy a wordpress theme of your choice and get your website up in few hours.

If you want to work as a professional web developer or designer then you should learn Photoshop, Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, and any other programming language like PHP with database Management system like Mysql.

    Hope it will help you.

    Thanks

HTML and CSS is definately useful knowledge, even if you are only using wordpress for your sites. The knowledge gives you freedom to be independent from experts when you desperately need to make some quick changes which cannot be done in the wordpress admin itself. I highly recommend w3cschools and starting small.

Look at some simple websites and try to replicate their layout in HTML and CSS. When this is no longer a challenge, try more complex websites or your own websites.
