Does anyone know where I can really get images which are free to use? I don't care if there are restrictions such as do not use for porn, or do not use to promote violence, or something like that. However a few sources has recommended Stock Exchange as one example, and after going through 4 pages of images for my niche EVERY picture I wanted to use required me to ask permission or give credit. This makes the whole concept of royalty free kind of difficult.

Anyone know of a much better place to get such pictures, where it's not common place to have to ask for formal written permission or "give credit"?

Never mind. I got it worked out more or less. Setting up a site really is a pain. Like they say, learn by doing.. especially in this business. =)

sxc.hu -- I use that too..great resource for web designing. Although I never find what I'm looking for. Usually istockphotos has a better selection IMO.

Don't hunt for 'royalty free' images - hunt for 'public domain' images. Those are totally free to use.

  • Also 123rf.com has a fairly extensive free photo section (free for up to 10,000 copies). Lots of nice stuff in there too; very professional looking.

Here's the page: Free Royalty Free Photos, Pictures, Images and Stock Photography.

The-English-Webmistress is really Andrea, who went backpacking the world, accidentally landed in Panama, Central America, and never left. (Beaches! Mountains! Hot latin music! Piña Coladas!) She doesn't miss the London commute AT ALL...

istockphoto or gettyimages for commercial images, sxc.hu or flickr for blogging/post images. It's worth the money to pay a small fee in order to get the best quality images and avoid any legal mumbo jumbo down the line, it's just not worth your time to deal with legal issues that could be avoided...that is of course, assuming sxc.hu didn't have just what you want for free.

Might also want to check deviant art, I've found a bunch of stuff on there, and just contacted the creator and got permission, no problem (most have been flattered to be asked and didn't mind in the least...especially if you flip em' a couple of bucks).

deviant art is brilliant just ask them first and paste it back to them so they can see (and possibly share it to show off) == works both ways!

Flickr is good, you will find many of the unseen photos there, and it's very easy to contact from the poster/owner of the pics.

This is an issue that is becoming, more and more relevant, as part of some research for a client, I had to read over the terms and conditions, at the larger stock or royalty free image providers, and I can tell you that they are so restrictive, that you almost cannot use the images without breaking one or more of their "rules"

Almost no one reads all the fine print, they just check the box that says I agree without really knowing what they are agreeing to do.

Most of the time this is no harm no foul, but my clients wanted true unrestricted, use, which is almost not provided outside a few very small publishing houses.

On one such company, they had so many restrictions, that in the end they said in one paragraph that use of the image was illegal, and in yet another paragraph they state that it is legal, contradicting, statements in the same document.

So in the end, sometimes it is good to know just what the rules are,)

    Great links thanks for those
