I have a hostgator reseller account for my .coms however now need to host a fair few .co.uks so am looking at UK reseller accounts. [ saw a Matt Cutts video which seemed to say UK sites might benefit from UK hosting ... he was a bit vague though ].

Based on my "example site" stats which should be similar to my soon to be UK sites...

: example site last month 600 visits
: Bandwidth used 106.57 MB.
: Disk Space Usage 24.65 / 3072 M

could anyone tell me how many "similar" sites I could host with this package?

Disk space 10 GB
Data Transfer or Traffic 50 GB

I thought working this out would be simple but these are the 2 replies I received from 2 hosting companies..

First company "about 250"
Second company "about 10"

Clearly I do not expect an exact figure however these 2 estimates I was given are way out...

Cheers.. David

405 sites (you'd exhaust disk space before bandwidth, based on the figures you've given).

However, it's not as simple as that.
    - if your web site increases in traffic and disk size, then you don't want to host 405 sites, otherwise there'd be no room to expand
    - other server and network resources would probably become saturated (fully used) if you host such a high number of sites on a single server / shared server (therefore some hosting companies may specify a maximum, such as 10 sites, to ensure good web site uptime)

You really need to rephrase the question - how many sites do you need to host, and how much traffic are you aiming to get?

Another option is to go for a virtual / cloud based hosting approach, such as Linode or VPS.net, where you can purchase additional server resources as your sites grow.

      Hi N7..

Many thanks for the reply, these sites will be local business sites with very low traffic and very few pages.. maximum 20 pages per site..

I was thinking about 100 sites so it sounds as if this will work fine.

Again many thanks for your reply..

      Kindest regards David

    Hi David,

With 100 sites, I'd suggest looking at a host that'll allow you to easily scale your hosting requirements, should some or all of those sites start to attract more traffic over time. In the long run, it means you're spared the hassle of having to potentially move your web sites to another host - it's definitely worthwhile thoroughly researching the right host and getting it right first time, to save hassle in the long run.

    Tim.
