I earlier bought hosting package from dreamhost during the special offer time during some US holidays. Now I already has a hosting package from Hostgator which I cannot afford to be spending money every month. Now I would like to shift all my wordpress blogs which was hosted on hostgator including all the pictures and thumbnail images used in the respective blogs to dreamhost.
I know that its possible to update all the posts from wordpress to another host, just by exporting the sql file from the wordpress Dashboard. But my question is,is it enough just to transfer those files or do I need to download and save some other stuff so that all my plugins, wordpress posts and the pictures gets changed to the new hosting provider.

I can't help personally, but when I have changed webhosts, my new host has moved my sites over for free. Would Dreamhost do that for you? That would be completely painless for you :-)

Alternatively, I've noticed a few WSO's recently about how to move wordpress blogs, here's one for example..

    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...ll-rights.html

I'm sure you could also find instructions using Google.

You can use the export - import feature of wordpress, but your going to have a working install on both servers.

Or, if both servers have cpanel and the Web Hosting Management (WHM) control panel, you can use the transfer site feature in WHM.

I do not remember the exact location of the transfer site feature, but I have used it a couple of times. It will transfer the site, email, database, images,,,,, everything. All you need is the account log in information to both WHM accounts.

After the site has been transferred, just update the DNS hosting where you have the domain names registered. The traffic will slowly be diverted to the new server.

The only problem is, if this is a large site, say over 10 gigs or so the transfer site script will time out.

If you just have cpanel, your HOST will have WHM and can probably move the site for you. Ask Dreamhost, as Audrey said. That's absolutely the easiest way.

Disclaimer, this is what has worked for me and may not be the best method. Please do some more research and fully backup all files, databases etc before trying any sort of host shift. Also, with this method you will need to redo all your plugin and wp settings so make sure you note these down first.

Upgrade all plugins and wordpress installation on your current site.

Export database using Wordpress export function. This is found in tools > export.

Create a new installation of wordpress on your new host

Copy the wp-content folder across to my new hosting and overwrite all. This brings across plugins and themes.

    Activate all plugins.

Replicate all wp and plugin settings on new host.

Check check check to make sure everything is as it should be!

    Hope this helps...

Yes I tried that export import function from wordpress.
But only posts and content are getting transferred.
How to transfer images and plugins stored?

The uploads folder has to be writable so the images can be transferred from the old server to the new server.

In other words, when you import the xml file, its going to reach out to the other wordpress install, and try to download those images to the new site. If the uploads folder is not writable, its not going to work.

The plugins have to be installed manually.

There is a paid backup plugin (backup buddy at PluginBuddy | WordPress Plugins) that will backup the whole wordpress area and database so you can move the whole site. It also generates a php file you load on the new host and run to install the old site on the new site - you don't pre-install wordpress as it moves over the version with plugins and tweaks from the old site. I don't recall the price but I don't think it is too expensive. I've also recently seen a post about another backup plugin (I think was free) in these forums but can't find at the moment - do some searching and you should find it.
Also use google on wordpress backup and you might find it.

This is a neccessity for any WP power user - it saves you SO MUCH aggravation, well worth the cost!

You'll have to export the site in Wordpress, and then import it to the new installation. You will also need to FTP the files to the new host, or install a fresh Wordpress copy.

Should take around 15-30 minutes, or so.

Download all the Wordpress files . Export the database as .sql file. Login into the new hosting account, create a new database and database user. Change the database information in the wp-config.php file. Upload the wordpress files in the correct folder if you're not installing in the main domain or root folder of the domain. Import the database. Check the upload path of your blog in your phpmyadmin. And you should be good to go.

I have a confusion regarding 2 of wordpress settings while importing
One is Tools>Export which exports a XML file.
Second is Tools>Backup then exports an sql.gz file
Are these 2 files enough to backup and move Servers for my Wordpress Blog?

Let me ask you this? Do any of those blogs have traffic?
Do any of them have more than say 10 plugins?

I had like 2 blogs on Dreamhost. I ran into problems with just two sites. They started killing my user agent and I ran into errors all day long from within the WP admin panel.

It's pretty easy to overload the server on Dreamhost shared hosting if you have >1 site and even a bit of traffic. They'll tell you the only way to fix it is to upgrade to VPS which will cost you more than your shared Hostgator account.

    My advice: think twice.

And,yes I do have more than 2 plugins,so is it possible to move the whole plugins along with the blog posts&pages?

Just a question: Isn't it so advertised by hosting companies that they will provide "hosting transfer"? I read that some will transfer all your blogs data for free. Anyone tried that before?

Any host worth buying from will transfer at least 1 of your sites for you.

Most host will have some kind of limit on the number of sites they will move. If you have 100 sites, they may only move 2 or 3 of them for you. Then again, I have seen host say they will move all of your sites for you.

One situation I ran into with a new host moving one of my sites - they zipped all of the files of the site, and uploaded the zip file to the html/ folder. When I asked when the site was going to be moved, they described what they did. I found another host the same day and canceled my new account. If they can not even move a site, how can they be trusted to maintain a server.

So if I just need to transfer the wordpress posts, uploaded files like images etc and leave the plugins like that.Is it that much difficult.I just got an offer from Dreamhost for 10$ per year,so I just want to cancel my account with Hostgator for saving some $ per month.

Is that Wordpress Database Backup Plugin? Will it transfer all the images and plugins?Plugins is OK for me as I could install it again. But I cant do the manual work of uploading and maintaining all the pictures. What I need to transfer along with all the Wordpress Posts&Pages is the Images and other plugin settings like SEO Search term Tagging settings which has been serving the search engines with the results which they interpret.

If your former host has a Cpanel it is very easy.
Dreamhost has an import from Cpanel option. You can find it in the menu on the left in their webpanel. It makes a copy of your site on your former host. So you don't lose the files. before you are sure everything works well on your Dreamhost account.
