Looking To Outsource Web Design

Hi I'm looking to outsource some of the Web Design work that I get to the Phillipines or India or actually anywhere that I can hire for a lower cost than internally within Malaysia.

Would anyone have any suggestions on companies I could use or their own experience in dealing with outsourced web design projects to the different countries?

I know it may seem a little lazy outsourcing web design projects from my own web design company to others, but I don't have the resources and the talent pool in Malaysia is not that deep.

Thanks in advance for the help!

-William

  • why not go for the famous sites like , freelancer.com, odesk, elance, there are actually many of them where you can hire some really good designer and that too in great price!

    • I've put a job post up on odesk.com and am screening through potential candidates now.

I'm also considering using a fellow Warrior Forum member from Indonesia. I'll try both out and see which ones work out best...
  • I've had great success with rentacoder.com, which will usually save money in the end instead of contacting a designer directly. I've found that it helps when you put a reasonable maximum bid in when creating the project, as well. Some people will bid $1,500+ on simple website design fixes.

    • I imagine rent-a-coder to be more suitable for more complex web design projects? I'm actually looking to hire a part time or full time outsourcer so that I can canvas for work in Malaysia and outsource the projects to web designers.

      Any suggestions?

  • Like some of the other posters above have said, outsourcing to the Phillipines is a great idea.

The premier expert on outsourcing to the Phillipines is John Jonas. Check out his Replace Myself website for lots of free valuable information, and visit the John Jonas blog.

That will get you started. Another resource I found on the warrior forum to hire Filipinos directly is Easy Outsource.

    Good Luck!

  • Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

I've recently paid for a monthly subscription to onlinejobs.ph and have managed to find 2 candidates to take on outsourced work.

The good thing about onlinejobs.ph is that people on that site are looking for part time/ full time work, whereas the other websites like odesk.com and elance.com are mostly on a per project basis.

I'm going to test hiring 1 graphic designer specifically for web layouts, and a programmer to make those web layouts into full fledged websites.

Problem is that to find a really good programmer will cost quite a bit more of a premium, but the combination of designer + programmer is still cheaper than 1 web designer here in Malaysia! :|

  • From my personal experience, outsourcing is thwart with problems that don't get discussed very often.

If you find a good reliable overseas worker, hang on to him/her with your vulcan death grip because they are very hard to find.

It took me months to find suitable candidates.

The problem with many outsourced designers is they will tell you they can complete anything just to get the job. Sometimes they don't even understand what you are asking them to complete.

My advice would be to make sure:

    1. The outsourced employee has a very good grasp of your native language

    2. Put delay penalties in your agreement ($ amount for every day they go over the agreed upon deadline).

    3. Ask your candidates to explain back to you on an email what you have asked them to complete (this will tell you their comprehension level).

    4. Only pay 30% up front max.

    5. If you want a custom design, provide a coder with your own graphic file or at the very least hire separate people for graphic design and coding. Many outsourcers will use a web template and tell you it's a custom design.

    6. When you place an ad, put a code word somewhere in your add instructions and ask candidates to write that code word in their reply to you. If they don't include the code word, you know they have read or understood your request adequately.

There are a few good designers and coders overseas, but there are a 100x as many bad ones so be very careful.

    Hope that helps.
  • @talkreal, John Jonas is how I got started with outsourcing. He is a great source of information for outsourcing to the Philippines. Through listening to his info--I was able to start my own team and now have 6 on my team--only from the Philippines who do all of my work and work for my clients.

I too started with odesk in Dec of 2007 with a v.a. who by the way is still with me. As my business grew so did my team.

I usually don't hire per project--but my experience with outsourcing has been a very rewarding exp.

I'm not saying every single person I've hired has worked out--I'd be lying if I did.
    I have a very few "rules/guidelines"
A deal breaker is not receiving daily reports.
In order for me to be successful I absolutely require daily reports--NOT hour by hour--but a daily report that shows me where my team is on specific projects.
