Hi,

What is the best website design software available, as in quality and price?

I was thinking of using Dreamweaver to create my websites, will this allow me to make professional looking websites?

Thanks,
Matt

      Thanks for the quick reply.

      Do you use it yourself?

As you've probably gathered, I'm a complete noob in nearly everything IM so is it easy to publish websites on Dreamweaver and can you edit your website after you've published it and it's "online"?

Dreamweaver is the standard by which all others are measured. I migrated from the now extinct Adobe GoLive to Dreamweaver, and it's a great full-featured program- but there is a learning curve. I suggest that you become throughly entrenched in training before you open your doors for business. There are lots of free tutorials on the web. I use Lynda.com, and though it is a paid service, it is well worth the nominal monthly fee. Check them out and learn Dreamweaver during their free trial and see if you like it!

    Good luck-
    TR

Linux is a Platform mostly used on Servers. Its not a web desiging software.

      ------------------

Ms.Front Page and Dreaweaver are the best HTML Authoring Tools IMO. For Mockup you would need a ADOBE Photosshop or similar graphic programs that let you to design and slice graphics easily.

My steps to designing website are:
      1. Design and Slice in Photopshop
      2. Code in Ms.FrontPage/Dreamweaver
      3. Fine tune template in Coding Mode (If you are expert in html/css coding)

      Thats it!

    Hi Matt,

if you already have some basic web design knowledge (stuffs like html, php or asp) dreamweaver is the best and its the market leader now.

If you've completely zero knowledge about coding stuffs, I suggest you use xara web designer 6 - xara dot com. It costs only US50 and it can produce some of the best looking site on the fly.

    all the best.

I've used Dreamweaver and Microsoft's Frontpage, but for newbies I would highly recommend Artisteer as it allows me to create a professional website in around an hour.

Artisteer will not only create a webpage template for you but it will also create a Wordpress, Drupal, or Joomla template for you.

Artisteer ($70 - $120) costs much less then Dreamweaver (DW $300) and Frontpage (FP $210) and accordingly has less features then the two aforementioned brands. Moreover, Artisteer is extremely tight when it comes to web design.

ps - yes gimp is pretty solid when it comes to graphic design, and if you're a newbie you might want to check out these video tutorials done by some teenage kid - youtube.com/user/GimpKnowHow

Dreamweaver is the industry standard for HTML and CSS; however, if you know how to code, you can do just as well in any editor that has a design display.

I use Illustrator and Photoshop to create the actual design and then code it in Dreamweaver.

If you're starting from scratch then photoshop + dreamweaver is the way to go. Create your mock up in photoshop then code it in dreamweaver. But if you're in a hurry and need to put up a site ASAP just get a hosting and domain and install wordpress and you're good to go.

To design ASP.NET sites, I personally prefer Expression Studio 4. It is best for designing the websites and if you have the whole studio package you also get Design which can be used to design logos or images like backgrounds. For coding part, I prefer Visual Studio 2010 as its the best tool for .NET development and supports ASP.NET development too.

If want Dreamweaver and you can afford it, get the CS5 Creative Suite Design Premium. I'm not sure what the price difference is but you get 8 programs including Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, and Acrobat. I paid about $450 for it with a student discount.

You don't say what level of experience you have with web designing. I have some experience with XHTML and CSS so I never use the WYSIWYG aspects of the program. However, from what I can see in Dreamweaver CS5, you can just load a template and fill in what you need.

Almost everyone is recommending Dreamweaver but I don't unless you are really interested in designing your own sites. Dreamweaver is an expensive professional tool and can easily be overkill if you don't need all the functionality it provides. There are really nice free and premium templates out there and you can edit those with any free text or WYSIWYG editor.

I agree Dreamweaver is the best web editor out there, however CS6 has a little steeper learn curve. As said before if you are experienced then it should not be a problem. If not you may want to try something more focused around WYSIWYG, i.e. Frontage or Xara.

Dreamweaver is great because even people who don't know a lick of programming can make somewhat functional websites that look good. Dreamweaver might be the best but it has a huge learning curve. Xsitepro is having a small learning curve and serves the purpose of Internet Marketers better than DW. DW is not having SEO analysis and other things that XSitepro is having.

But, people say Dreamweaver produces a much better code than XSP. Hence, if you want to become a professional web designer, Dreamweaver is for you. You can learn web design and in the long run, it will be beneficial for you.

If you want to build a site right away without needing to learn any thing, then Xsitepro is for you.

By the way, if you are short of money or don't want to spend money on web site builders, then you can try Kompozer. It is free and it is easy to build a web site.

Dreamweaver is a huge pile of crap.

If you're not going to bother to learn HTML/CSS and write code yourself just outsource it.

You're only hurting yourself in the long run using WYSIWYG editors such as Dreamweaver, as the code they spit out is sub-par and in most cases bloated.

Personally, I think WordPress + Photoshop is your best bet.

Reason? WordPress will give you a structure (ie, you can use a full "page layout" where your sidebar is not seen for long pages that have a lot of content). Additionally, you can use a page with a sidebar template for pages that have very little content.

** Also, if you have the money, I would opt for DreamWeaver. There are times when you *NEED* to edit your HTML... and DW comes in handy.

I used Dreamweaver for years and finally after endless aggravation I finally learned Microsoft Visual Studio and learned to use it. VS is by far the easiest most powerful IDE to use. You have to understand I code everything by hand and don't use any of the drag and drop features of the "Design" view Oddly enough I now find myself considering buying Dreamweaver again solely for the purpose of deeloping PHP. I can only hope Adobe has fixed the stupid formatting issues it has. On the other hand I may instead get the $100 plugin that allows Visual Web Developer to support PHP.

I can get Dreamweaver in a CS suite for about $450 at an academic price. and that would come with Flash and Indesign and a few other titles. So even if Dreamweaer still sucks I would still have good use for Flash and of course the new versions of Photoshop and Illustrator and also Indesign. So I might do it.

Similarly, we recently made some difficult decisions, even worse support infrequently used features vs.

    Notepad++ (free).

    Photoshop or Gimp(free).

    PHPDesigner for PHP websites.

    And Wordpress Joomla or Drupal.

Diving into all those other software and you get a major headache and too much clutter IMO.

That's the best value for a person with enough knowledge to use them all.

For beginners I recommend starting with something like XSitePro or 90 second web builder just to get your feet wet.

Dreamweaver definitely the best in my books, even after pointing out it's bad points which are in CS5 it now has limited support (mainly in the way of server behaviours) for anyone developing ASP pages.

And I still use Filezilla if I'm going to upload a large number of files as I've always found Dreamweavers FTP is very clunky, it's ok for small batches of files but nothing more.

One good thing lately is the new multiscreen view in CS5 so you can test your layouts as if you were using a mobile.

Saying that, if you're on a very limited budget and building straight forward sites you can't beat the Filezilla / Notepad / Firefox Web Developer plugin and Gimp combo (all free)

I have used dreamweaver for years and really like it. Recently however I have been working on some tutorials to teach people how to make their own websites for free or as cheaply as possible so tried a free alternative. The one I used is called NVU and I found it easy to use and very functional. There is an other program called Komposer that I have not tried yet, but I hear really good things about it.

As a total newbie and a new member of Warriorforum, here's my 1 1/2 cents (I'm not qualified to try 2 cents) worth. I've used Dreamweaver for several years and really like it. It does have a steep ramp to get proficient, but worth the effort. I also started using Artister about a year ago and have to admit that I really like it. When I use it, I like to do minor HTML adjustments using Coffee Cup HTML editor which is awsome.

Dreamweaver is the best software for Website Designing. It is simple to use and easy to understand. It lets you design your web pages under real-world browser conditions with new Live view, while still retaining direct access to the code. Changes to the code are immediately reflected in the rendered display.lets you create new CSS rules, and provides clear, simple explanations of where each property fits in the cascade of styles. I have used it in my project and I will prefer to use it again.

Dreamweaver is riding on a reputation it no longer deserves. There was a time when there was nothing else out there that was as powerful as Dreamweaver but those days are long gone.

The absolute best editing software you can get these days is Visual Studio Express edition and it is absolutely free. Just Google" Download Visual Studio Express" and you will get a link to Microsoft's download page for VS.

VS is 10 times the editor that Dreamweaver ever was. Another great thing about VS is that it's great for bringing you up to speed on CSS and HTML. It validates your code as you are typing it giving you tips as to what the problem is if you have an error in your code. It also gives you tips on syntax as you're typing. For instance if you are typing in a style and you start "style="border:" it shows a tip giving you all the attributes available and the sequence the browser expects them in i.e. "border:[border style] [border width][border color]" This is great for the learning curve because you quickly become familiar with the correct syntax and the attributes available for what you are doing. Really speeds up the learning process. Also it has an auto complete feature so if you type in "font-f" and hit "enter" or even ":" it will complete it for you giving you "font-family:" and then showing you all the available fonts in a drop down; and again if you type in 'Ta" it will take you to "Tahoma" in the dropdown and again all you have to do is hit "enter" or ";" and it will complete it for you. Makes coding faster. But the absolute best think I like about VS is that it DOES NOT continually keep trying to format your code. Though there is a keyboard shortcut that will quick format your code for you if you want.

I started using Dreamweaver way back with Dreamweaver 4. I always hated it. Only recently did I discover VS. Oh happy day. And VS is completely FREE. Like I said, 10 times the editor Dreamweaver ever was.

Also VS is extremely powerful, It was designed from the ground up to work with ASP and MS SQL but works equally well with straight HTML. And there are hundreds of free video tutorials at asp.net. Literally hundreds.

Do yourself a favor; take the money you were going to spend on Dreamweaver and get an academic version of Photoshop. Use VS for your web authoring.

I personally use notepad to create all of my sites, i dont need no stinkin website creation software

Artisteer is easy and its customization of what it has to offer is decent for basic sites. You need to know html/css/photoshop though to spruce up the template it creates for you. I have used it to create some smaller sites many times.

You could use photoshop to design a site too slice up pictures with some text on them. It uses tables last i looked, dont believe anybody uses them anymore

If you are planning on doing layouts in DHTML or the like, Dreamweaver can get messy. I use it, but I am hooking into PHP development with it or other server based environments, If you really understand code level design I would suggest something far faster and cheaper.

Get notepad++ or textwrangler(for mac), these are text editors that understand syntax; they do the same thing that the editor in dreamweaver does. Create your index file in a folder on your hard-drive and open that in your browser. As you edit and preview, it is FAR more faster.

Now if you are going for WYSIWIG design and want something to help you lay things out visually and hook to your site live, that would be a prime reason to use DW. CS5 even hooks into Joomla and other CMS now (with some bugs). Either way you are going to get into some code issues primarily.

If you want to run with the pack of visually oriented people who do not care for code that much, I totally agree with artisteer and joomla (I imagine it does other CMS but have not looked into it).

Are you seriously asking if Adobe's worldwide leading brand of products "Dreamweaver" will allow you to make professional looking websites?

Well by your question I can say that they will allow you to, but you probably wont get near to making one.. it will be too much for you to handle. Stick with WP, it's easier with endless options.

I'm a Dreamweaver guy, but I think it is a personal preference based on what you learn to design with. I learned on Dreamweaver, so I have never taken the time to learn anything else, colleges use other products, but are they better? IMO because of the learning curve Dreamweaver will always be the best to me.

I'll never become a MAC guy for the same reason. I am a PC guy, have been for 15 years. I know how they work and I know how to fix them. I sit down at a MAC and I can make it work, but I have to retrain my brain to do so. Its really not worth all the effort is it.

Moral of the story, pick a program and learn how to use it. Don't get distracted trying lots of different programs, you wont make any progress on your web project.

    Don't bother with dreamweaver!!!!!!!!

Dreamweaver is nowhere as powerful as simply learning the code yourself (Its really really easy)

Or if you want a quicker solution (thats still better then dreamweaver) simply create your site using wordpress which is free. Wordpress is absolutely incredible and is by far the easiest way to create a website.

I'm a happy vim user for about 6 years. If you want a fully-featured IDE, you can try Netbeans. It's free, open source, and supports Java, PHP, C/C++ and more...

As a veteran computer technician, Web designer, and computer/e-commerce/Intrnet instructor at local colleges, I have used Dreamweaver since forever. I have taught Dreamweaver courses for years and my students love it. I Highly recommend it.

You do not have to buy the latest version to be fully satisfied with its features - unles you will be building sites for mobile users - the newest version has this feature.

    Best of luck,
    - Carlos

Hi, I agree with every one here that Dreamweaver is the best designing software. However,
although superb software, is to complex and I feel it would take me forever to learn. So second best is Kompozer. This is a free program and can create professionally looking website, with just a little creativity. So it really depends on what you are looking for.

Yes, Dreamweaver is good software for designing themes, but there is a software that is equally helpful in designing themes (or templates) from scratch, TemplateToaster. You can design fully responsive themes for all the major CMSs such as WordPress, Joomla, Magento, Drupal, Prestashop, Blogger, it supports Bootstrap 3 features, themes designed with this software will be SEO friendly, it generates source code automatically, multi browser and device compatibility and what is TemplateToaster -TemplateToaster more features it supports. Before buying it you may try its trial version.
