Hi,

I know it's not strictly appropriate for this forum but this is the most appropriate forum I feel.

I want to buy a domain and buy hosting for it, I'll be running the website on wordpress.

What is the best way to go about this?

Thanks,
Matt

For domain and hosting I'm looking at Network Solutions and GoDaddy, will a .net site handicap me at all?

Due to past experience I wouldn't sign up to Godaddy for their hosting packages.

Try Hosting24.com - First Class Web Hosting Services . They offer a free domain when you sign up for your hosting package. It's very cheap and they also offer great support.

They also offer WordPress amongst other handy features.

In regards to your question of whether or not a .net site will limit you, I think that it is best to stick with a .com domain if at all possible, especially because it is the most recognizable domain extension.

Also, check out this article for reasons why it is best to stick with a .com domain.

I've been a happy Hostgator customer for a while now, I'd recommend them. For domains, I try to avoid GoDaddy at all costs. I greatly prefer Namecheap.

I don't think a .net will hurt you all that much, especially if you're trying to get a specific keyword in the name for SEO purposes. However, if you plan on branding the site, .com is the way to go.

Register your domain with name cheap, look for a coupon code, and make sure and buy the $1.00 who is guard. Once you do that get online with Host Gator and get a baby croc account which will give you unlimited domain hosting for about $8.00 a month.

Good luck in your online ventures.

I use GoDaddy for domain names. Some people recommend Namecheap, but I've never tried them. I use HostGator for hosting. HostGator has Fantastico, which makes installing WordPress pretty easy.

i prefer to use dreamhost. I found a promo code (in my sig) that makes one year of hosting pretty cheap, and you can get a free domain. They also have "one click installs" (which most major hosting companies have) that will allow for easy installation and customization of wordpress.

Dreamhost also has a decent amount of adwords credit......and if it makes a difference they are a "green" company.

I think the Godaddy should be your first choice for domain name because it is very economical and have all the necessary tools and great backup support and for hosting you can check hostgator.

its a good practice to have domains and hosting from two different places.

some good names for domains are:

    namecheap.com
    name.com

I have used a few different hosts in the past and my personal favorite is Hostgator. They have good packages for hosting with a lot of features included in the monthly price. Their support is also one of the best I have experienced. They deliver very fast and clear responses, unlike some of the other hosting services like GoDaddy. I like GoDaddy when it comes to registering domains because they offer good rates and have many coupons, but they are not my first choice when it comes to hosting. Some other hosts I have had good experiences with are DreamHost and SiteGround.

I've used Hostgator, Dreamhost, GoDaddy, and Blue host.

Hostgator: okay, but kinda slow for shared hosting
    GoDaddy: had server overload issues.
Dreamhost: sucks. You can get a shared package for like $2 per month, but if you have more than one site hosted or any traffic, they will push you to their VPS service which is freakin terrible. I have 2 sites still on Dreamhost VPS that I have to move still. Down all the damn time. Changed servers twice too since they blamed it on the server.
Bluehost: 6-7 dollars per month. Handles tons of traffic, reliable and fast.

    I would recommend Blue Host.

[Professional Tip] - if your plans include having multiple sites on the web then you should have your domain names hosted separate from your websites.

    Hey Rough Outline Writing,

    Here's what I do...

    1. I host my domain names under Netfirms at $8 the first year then $10 each year after.
    2. I host my websites under HostMONSTER (not gator - too spendy for me at $15 month). Hostmonster charges $6 bucks a month and you can host as many sites as you want (I host about 50 under my $6 bucks a month plan)

    Netfirms = netfirms.com
Hostmonster = hostmonster.com/track/joshuamcel (obvious affiliate link provided )

I've used godaddy for clients because their infrastructure and phone support is veer good (your site won't go down and if it does they'll fix it). The godaddy user interface is super convoluted though.

Lately I've also heard good things about hostgator... I'll have to give them a shot in the near future.

Either one will run WP just fine. Best of luck with your venture!
