Hi All.

I've not a lot of experience with WP and trying to set up a site with WP as a CMS.

There will be some static pages as well as the blog, but even after searching forums and the plugins I've not found out how to get the look I want, static pages not showing the blog functions but the blog showing, edit, categories, archives and so on.

On static pages I don't want the blog stuff , edit, archives, categories and so on to appear. But on the blog pages I still want all the common blog functions. So there are two distinct page types - static and blog.

I've had a look around the plguins and found some that seem to let a user arriving at the site choose a theme but nothing that will let me pick one for the static pages and another for the blog pages.

How can this be achieved? Is there a theme that does this?

I'm most concerned about making the static page look just like the pages on a static site, it's not to hard until I try to keep the blog as well and then the changes I made (or theme choice) spill over onto the Blog pages and the blog looses a lot of it's functions.

I could make 2 matching themes with Artisteer and then install WP twice once as a cms for the static and again for the blog but it's nasty and clumsy.

Is there an elegant way to use two themes, do I even need two themes?

If I link a page to a parent page and save it how can I then edit the link to change to a different parent? I just had to trash n rebuild some pages I wanted to move.

Many Thanks aamcle

Hi aamcle. There are some themes out there which allow you to manipulate the Pages to Blog Style or Full width. You can find the option in the Page Attributes box when creating a page. In my theme it gives me a choice; Full Width, Blog Style, Archive Style, etc.

I use the Lifestyle Theme on my blog and it has these options, but it is a premium theme. You may be able to find a free one that does the same if you look around but I don't know any off the top of my head.

I know I can choose which page I want as a front page and I have used themes that give the choice between fixed width and blog style.

The problem seems to be that I want BOTH, blog style on blog pages and static for the static pages.

So I need two functionalities, plain vanilla on the static pages but on the blog pages I want the full function set.

I can get either easily but having both seems to be a problem..

      Thanks aamcle

What you're looking for is called a page template. As Deirdre noted, some themes ship with multiple page templates - these can be selected if you edit the page and look on the right side under Attributes. If the theme you're using has more than one template, they will show up in the drop-down box; select the template you want to use and save the page.

You may have to do a bit of searching to find a free template that has the look you're going for, or you can hire someone (hint, hint) to modify the theme to add the template you want.
