Wordpress Double Homepage Issue

Hi guys,

So I've been learning wordpress over the last few weeks, but I've been having one problem that I just cannot find the answer to!

It involves changing a main page to a static page... and I'm left with an extra home page.

I'm SURE there must be a very easy fix or slight I overlooked in this matter. It's caused me such a headache and I've been searching and searching but I just can't find an answer so I'm hoping one of my fellow warriors might be able to help me solve this.

As a off topic question I've downloaded the plugin "no category" anyone know if I install that on an existing site is it going to mess up my links that are organized into categories or does it not cause any issues with that.

Thanks and hoping someone can really help me out here!
Just had an all time high today too on this site... I'm sure if it didn't have 2 homepages and I cleaned it up some more it could convert even better!

That doesn't make any sense... What kind of extra home page?

So you've configured WordPress to display a static page as the front page (via Settings - Reading Settings)... then what?

Basically I go to reading settings I change it to display as a front page, I choose the appropriate page.

      Save.

Then when I go to look at my site there is a Home button still there and the page I've designated as the new home page is there acting as the main URL redirection button, Home button does the same thing.

The more I read about this the bigger a problem it seems to be but there isn't an easy fix from what I can find. I'm just curious why only some people seem to experience issues with it. I'm trying to install a plugin that might fix it. If I find a fix I'll definitely post it here.

Sounds like there's a 'Home' link that's hard-coded into the theme. You'll have to edit the header.php file of the theme. You can either remove the hard-coded link, or add 'exclude=#&' (where #=the post id of your static home page) at the beginning of wp_list_pages arguments - I'm guessing here, because this is the Wordpress function typically used to show pages in the navbar of most themes. If you need help doing this, PM me or check out my sig.

OK, now I got it. mrmagos has it right, since you have the one page as the home page, you need to exclude the page from the menu (not displaing "home" is probably better for SEO thou), and possibly the XML sitemap as well if the page will acts as homepage from now on.

...since it requires digging into the theme, it's not very simple for a beginner / non-tech person. if the theme would support the WordPress 3.0 menu system, you could do all this from the Dashboard, but I'm guessing that's not the case.

As a sidenote, putting a static page as the front page is rarely needed, so I would consider not doing it... Unless it's a specific page designed to act as a welcome/landing/squeeze -page, I would leave the front page as it is (and possibly add a "sticky post" to the top instead) = no headaches from issues like this and takes no time.

If you go to header.php in the appropriae theme folder for your site and post it here I will show you what to remove or change. Alternatively email it to me: martin [at] unleashyourniche.net and I'll change it for you.
