WordPress or Drupal??

HI guys,

I want to build a social/community site, with forum, individual member accounts, blog, latest news, articles etc and space for members to easily network with each other according to their interests, demographics, issues.... big task, I know.

Just can't decide which platform to use - WordPress or Drupal? I know WordPress better, & know I can use a range of plugins to accomplish what I want to do, but should I just bite the bullet and start straight from Drupal?
I know it's supposed to be more powerful and secure....

What are your thoughts &/or experiences?

  • By seeing your requirement we can advise you to go the customized solutions rather then using wordpress or drupal or any other CMS technology.

    Your requirement is like social/community, forum, blog, news, articles , member registration - space for members to easily network. If you will use any CMS then it will take your customization cost. There are many plugins which you can use but you can not use them directly. You may need to customize them as per your need and that will take a cost of new development only.

    Even if we want to see it from the future perspective then it may that you want to improve functionality of the features then again you have to go for the customize the plugins.

    where as customized solutions is not only for now but good for the future perspective also.

    • in case of cms better we use word press then plug in are easily install. and whatever we want to use , we can freely use .
  • Go for Drupal Commons - it'll do pretty well everything you want out of the box. If you have a custom solution, you'll be locked into using the person who wrote it. I've done work getting some of the largest companies in the world to get them using it for their sites (these aren't Drupal Commons - it's even easier with that).

    Give me a shout if you want any advice on the best way to do it.

      I've asked a similar question in the Programming forum, as I wasn't too sure where to post this question - but have any of you used a social networking script, like elgg or PHPizabi?

      Would I be better off going with one of those, or stick with Drupal?

      Which would be best in the long term, the project i'm working on is for a NGO with a huge database.

      Any and all thoughts and experiences would be much appreciated.

  • For a Community site, (no doubt) Drupal is the best choice.

    Drupal is meant for very large sites, like social networking, community etc. It has a built in User registration capability. Drupal is a modular framework, we can extend it and add new capabilities with private modules, most of them are free, we can get it in the Drupal site.

    Wordpress is meant for blogging. :rolleyes:

    • Yes, I am agree Drupal is best. Drupal is an open-source Web Development Framework or Content Management System(CMS). It is usually a powerful software framework, which suggests it's designed so many alternative website.

  • I have a large member site in Drupal (10k Members) - 9 months down the line, I'd suggest, if you already know Wordpress, then go WP+BuddyPress - Drupal has a super steep learning curve, and unless you are prepared to roll up your sleeves and watch a million hours of Drupal videos (that's what I've had to do just to keep up with the building the site), that's where I'd go.

    Have you considered Joomla? - I did a smaller member site a while ago (about 200 members) using it and it did not have the steep learning curve that Drupal does. Just an idea to throw out there. There is a paid option called Jomsocial that would really fit what you are trying to do.

  • Wordpress is more meant for the basic websites, sites with a few static pages or/with a blog. With Drupal you can build complex websites and customize it at your needs. The only opposite is the learning curve of Drupal (this due the options Drupal offers you).

    I must admit that I don't have experience with Buddypress.

    • IF you are attracted to Drupal due to its power, and have html/css skills (php skills even more so), then the more up-to-date MODx Revolution is another option to consider. I have chosen MODx to port my old site to. Was going to use Joomla or Drupal to give me more options than Wordpress, but was struggling with the overly complex syntax. MODx is clean and simple in comparison.

  • Complex syntax? I must say Joomla is not logical build also the theming is a disaster but Drupal is quite okay I think.

    I started with Joomla, went to Wordpress (still using) and now using Drupal for the bigger sites. Cant say anything bad about modx because I never used it but if you look at which sites are build with Drupal and it keeps on going. Joomla was for a long time a very popular system but this will change due the lack of innovation.
  • I'm personally a WordPress fan and use it for my clients membership sites with forums included (phpBB3). Its not perfect by any means (in a programmers world) but it works and runs smooth.

    But I suggest that any plug-ins you go with that you have an experienced developer look through them first. Including themes.

    There are tons of options but a great deal of them create heavy database loads or run your http requests through the roof.
    This pretty much stands no matter what you use. If its for a big site worth a bag of money, pay someone with experience to make sure that it will be secure and run smooth under a traffic load.
    WordPress can be just as secure as anything else, you just have to know what your doing and make sure that what you install was programmed by someone that knew what they were doing.

    • I totally agree, ppl often give Wordpress a hard time, but as everyone noted you won't spend ten years learning, nor spend boat loads on a Drupal Ninja. WP is a blog software yes, but with a few quick (and easy) php or perl lessons you quickly stop saying "it can't". Personally, I've used it with Noah, TGPX, and phpBB with users at once. And just as bbxpert said it can be as secure as anything else too, and don't forget the sheer size of the plug in library. There are numerous methods of grouping that type of networking data, but again just a little php and a few plugins go a long way on a sturdy server, which should be the main concern in a site like that, no matter your software heavy loads and simultaneous request on a feeble server will make anything look bad.
      Can you tell I vote Wordpress? But don't let me influence your decision, cheers and good luck btw.

      But depending on your comfort level with development, maybe look into Joomla.

      Joomla is more "user friendly" and when you're looking through the extensions it has more pictures, clear explainations, and demos of what the extensions do. Drupal's module library is all text based and is very lingo heavy, so it could get confusing to peruse.

      Either way, Drupal or Joomla would do what you're looking for.

  • You'd better choose Drupal, but you should know how to customize it, teask.com is my site, it is built by Drupal.
  • I don't know whether you have any knowledge of joomla or not. but i will recommend you to use joomla for community site.

    It does not require more then one plugins to build a community website.

    You just need community builder and you are done.

    I have community builder if you require i can provide it to you and also its support if you want.

    • You're hitting two birds with one stone if you decide to build your site with wordpress since you already have experience with it.

      You level up your knowledge with WP while building your site as compared with using Drupal wherein you have to start all over again. Not to mention the steep learning curve of it.

    I would like to introduce two options. 1 .jomsocial( Open Source Community Software | Social Networking with Joomla) and 2 :phpfox(Social Networking Script)

    Both have pretty good back up support.

  • I've tried Elgg, it has good basic features, but you'll likely get into problems when the time comes to extend the fatures. Open Source CMS like WP/Drupal/Joomla excels in the vast array of community based solutions, you can always get a help from professionals too

  • Drupal has a lot of great features. One website builder swears by it and raves about it. For me the learning curve is too steep. It would take too long to get to the level of ability to put up sites I am at already with Wordpress. Besides WP is growing in functionality. It can certainly do everything I need a site to do. If there were some function I really needed I would go with Drupal and probably hire someone to do it. If I was going to do a big ecommerce site or an advanced and complex membership site I would certainly give Drupal serious consideration, but for ecommerce it would have to compete with Magento too.

  • I love both Joomla and Wordpress, but if this is the case I would go with Drupal. It has granular ACL's right out of the box.

    But the big thing is that you haven't mentioned but I am sure your client would need is CRM features. Drupal has an amazing addon called CiviCRM that allows you to have paid and recurring memberships, track donations, run fundraising campaigns, events, etc.

    There is also a CiviCRM version for Joomla and I've installed and use it on several sites, but the mass mailing function isn't as slick as it is on Drupal.

      Wordpress: is good, light .. suitable for beginner, Blog, simple decent website, but if you are looking for expanding your business ... hmmm this is not a good choice

      Drupal: If you are good at php and looking for a reliable system or looking for a Originality/ Quality website then the choice is drupal ... the flexibility they offer at core module is awesome, you can do what ever you want ...

      I have a client who started there business with just 3 people, we did there simple website in drupal 5.x in 2007 ... we keep upgrading the website when ever they have some requirement ..now they have more than 100 employees and huge client,

      To Support that we upgraded to Drupal 6.x, this system can handle Custom CRM, Email Marketer send more than 50,000 emails/ month, Project Management System and ERP system - Apart from that now we are working on E-commerce functionality for there 2011 release working on drupal 7.x

      Now tell me ... Which Open source have this much robustness and at the same time Flexibility

      Drupal is great and you can achieve anything with it. But its not easy and you will spend a lot of time learning it.

      if you want to launch your site fast, then wordpress+buddypress is a great option.

  • You may want to take a look at Joomla and the Community Builder extension, might meet your needs. I know that wasn't an option for the question, but I think should be addressed; plus, I'm a joomla expert and will always vote for it.

      So, it depends on the project, without knowing all the details, I suggest you go with WordPress and BuddyPress...

      If you are willing to put in a couple of months to really learn the Drupal framework or you have enough capital to pay someone, then Drupal might be a better system for you. Otherwise go with WordPress.

  • I'm firmly in a Drupal camp. Yes, it's harder to learn - but how long is going to take to turn Wordpress into a community website if he's never done that before? At least Drupal was meant as a community platform and there're a lot of modules to that purpose (usually free, I might add). I admit, however, that Wordpress has a lot more quality themes available if you don't want to create your own.

    I find both Drupal and WordPress very easy to use, from my point of view, but WordPress has so many more plugins and metrics is much easier with it.
    My choice is WordPress at the end.

    There are many easy to use and install tutorials on both.

  • Why is there not anyone mentioning about Wordpress MU?

    Unless I misunderstood what the OP was asking for, but Wordpress can do most of the stuffs and there are far more WP developer than Drupal developers, I guess?

    Thus, developing WP themes, sites, hacks, plugins would be cheaper than if you were opting for Drupal, I guess?

  • I keep watching this discussion and wonder why people keep fussing about the choice of the actual frameworks.. You can build a site in any framework if you know how to program. Wordpress is great to get a site going - but the downside is that it's all written with a "C" style philosophy meaning that it's not 100% object oriented = not clean code = pain to maintain for larger projects.

    Wordpress is procedural - Drupal is object oriented. With an object oriented framework you have cleaner code and better separation of concerns within the codebase. With a procedural framework you can easily customize the site without having to write a lot of boilerplate code for your classes. Wordpress reminds me a little of how Quake was coded. Simple, procedural, callback based. But constrained in many ways since you can not subclass framework objects.

    For a large site you want to have an object oriented base so that you can extend it in many more ways and have better overall structure in your code. Wordpress is designed to be user friendly - drupal is designed to be programmer friendly. Which one do you want is up to you. Although in the end you can build an object oriented site on top of wordpress just like you can with any other framework. In the end each one is just a framework designed to make certain programming tasks easier.

    Although I think that you should look at your requirements and see what features each framework provides straight out of the box and how each framework fits with what you are looking for. Drupal was designed for large, functionally rich sites. Wordpress was designed for content based sites.

    For sites I build for clients I use exclusively wordpress because it's so easy to customize and is very user friendly from the admin perspective. But if you are developing a site that only you will be administering and where user friendliness on the admin side is not an issue, then any framework is fine as long as it provides as much of the functionality that you need out of the box.

  • Go with WordPress. There is an abundance of latest plugins and themes and great support. Try Drupal if you want and are experienced. I really never liked Drupal, though WhiteHouse.org is built on Drupal.

  • I get a lot of emails and comments about my "WordPress is better than Drupal" talks, presentations, videos, slide-shares, and rants.WordPress started out with a focus on ease of use for bloggers and content creators, and secondarily providing a platform for developers to build plug-ins and such.
  • Wordpress is probably much better for an out of a box single user blog. You are using the right tool for the job. Drupal is much more of a framework for creating all sorts of different kinds of websites. Don't get me wrong, Drupal could be used to blog with straight out of the box, but it wouldn't feel as intuitive or natural. The user experience and workflow for the person just wanting a blog in Wordpress is superior right now. That is something that will most likely be fixed in Drupal 7.

  • Definitely Drupal if your a webdeveloper. But if you have only basic knowloedge in php, go for Wordpress, it's very secure, but not as fast as Drupal. But it;s easier to setup an online community using Buddypress, a nice premium theme. Go for Premium Themes, you'll have updates, support, nice design, good code.

  • I will go with wordpress for the simple reason, it takes less time to create a custom website. It sounds like you need to read on the type of self-definition and classification. I do not understand why your request can not be mentioned by the CPT process, if the settings are correct.

    • Drupal is a content management system and Wordpress started as a blogging system is now with version 3.X can do lot more than blogging. What you are looking for is a social networking software.

      You need to add several modules (drupal) and plugin (wordpress) to make them work as a social networking software.

      With wordpress you need to use Buddypress version 1.5 to get community sites features, Like wise if you choose drupal you need to use drupal commons, which is drupal core plus several community feature modules come prepackaged with drupal commons.


      Drupal is powerful and there are several features that can be turned on without much coding or theme tweaking as you sign up members and site become popular. With wordpress you need to develop a plugin or design a theme to include any new type of content.

      I love wordpress but I would choose drupal over wordpress for your requirement.

      If you need other choice, look at ocportal, pligg, elgg these are some good social networking software to build community site

    Wordpress is great for smaller sites, blogs and projects like that. Drupal is powerful, sure, but a pain to work with. Needlessly complex in some respects, and lacks good online documentation.
    Drupal allows for easy creation of membership sites and portals. Wordpress advantage over hand coding is that wordpress is easier and faster.
  • I'm a WordPress fanboy, so my vote may be a bit bias. I've found Drupal a bit difficult to navigate (I only played with it for a few hours, but if it takes a few hours to get too much accomplished, that's a problem - I can get WP functional and professional in an hour at the max (plugins, themes, etc. included) ).

    I love BuddyPress for WordPress - it's a real gem. It'll create a rich community factor that you can't normally get with WordPress. I'd suggest trying it out! You then have a wide range of themes and plugins to cater to your desires for a rich user-experience.

  • Use WordPress, there is alot more plugins & themes, and alot more help with it. I have been using it for about 4 years now on multiple sites for my own use and my clients. My clients says to me that it is so easy, nice & clean to use. I would definitely recommend it to everyone
