Designing or modifying templates in Magento or Zen is going to be very different than what you'll find in a standard HTML/CSS book. Magento is based on the Zend framework and Zen Cart uses Smarty. If you aren't familiar with either, you may find it a daunting task, at least in the beginning.

I'm much more familiar with Zen, so I can attest to the fact that their forum and faq/tutorials are helpful, but there is a definite learning curve. I learned it that way, but I am comfortable enough with php and Smarty to put the missing pieces together.

That said, there are some books and ebooks that could help speed the process along. This is the one that Zen Cart promotes on their site: e-Start Your Web Store with Zen Cart, ecommerce shopping cart software by Zen Cart ecommerce solution . I hope it will be helpful to you.

I highly recommend the Lynda.com service - they have many series on html, css, design practice - they make high quality videos

In most areas of programming I've found Sams Teach yourself books very useful. They are certainly not easy going - but they manage to capture all the important elements without going on for years at a time. Beyond that, the internet is obviously the best resource for learning an internet based language though!
