Need Help Uploading My Homepage With Dreamweaver (Video Inside)

I am just messing around with DreamWeaver (version 2004 MX), trying to get a feel for it and do the basics.

At one point everything was fine and dandy. Now I am ready to throw my laptop!! I know that you have to name your homepage index.html. I created a quick page and saved it as index. Then when I tried to upload it, nothing is working. I am able to connect to my server. So it's not that. It keeps telling me the index doesn't exist. Which it does, but when you look for it in dreamweaver, it isn't there....you'll see what I mean in the video.

If you go to my site, http://www.coloredcowmarketing.com you'll see that it is nothing. It should just have a red headline that says "Headline Goes Here"....my simple test page.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong? I'll probably make a fool of myself. (Do I need to upload in Local View?) Oh well, as long as it gets figured out.

Thanks in advance!!

Here is the video. No sound but hopefully you can see what's going on.

Although I use Dreamweaver for the sites I develop I use an external program to ftp files to my sites etc. so I am rusty on the inbuilt tool.

What does the view show in Dreamweaver when you can see what files are on the remote site etc.? Have you tried using a separate FTP application? There's plenty of free ones available.

Never used the MX version, but I assume it is pretty much the same as version 8 and CS/3. Highlight the root directory in the right file panel, and click the up arrow, or "put files". It will probably warn you that you are about to put the entire site, but that is what you want.

You should probably make sure that you are uploading to the correct directory. Sometimes the default directory is not the root folder. The root folder is sometimes named after your website, or is called "html", or "public_html".

I used to use SmartFTP. Now they charge for it, so I don't use it anymore. Tried another program, didn't like it.

Any recommendations for a free one to use?

I tried what you did in the first paragraph. Does what's in the video.

As for your second paragraph, I think that's my problem. it's uploading to the wrong directory.

I can't figure out how to upload to a different directory. When I got my hosting account, the main domain name is something different than the one I am trying to update. So I think that's my problem. But I can't figure out how to fix it. I thought I set it up correctly, but apparently I didn't.

First, look at the site in "remote view", so that you can see what folder seems likely to be the root directory. Either you can create this folder in local view, and place the entire site inside of it, or you can try this:

In the files panel, click twice on the top of the dropdown list, which tells you the name of the site you are working on. This should bring up a "site-definition". Click the forward arrow until you come to the FTP/login information. There should be a field to say which folder on the remote site you want to store you files in. Type the name of the directory you suspect to be the root directory there. Save the settings.

Using a third-party FTP program seems pretty silly to me. If you were using SSH with SVN it would make sense, since Dreamweaver doesn't support those. FTP is super easy to use from Dreamweaver, however.

I will give this a try when I get some time.

          THANK YOU.

I have been using Core FTP Lite for some time. The website for Core FTP is www.coreftp.com.

I highly recommend Filezilla as a free ftp program to use. The one I used to use began charging so I recently switched to this. It's excellent.
