Question about use of H1 on Wordpress

I'm using SEOpressor to optimize my WP site and for each post I go into I get the message that I should add <h1>, <h2> and <h3> tags with my keyword in it.

My confusion is this:
Each post has a title. When I add the <h1> tag to the title my post gets optimized, i.e. I get a higher score, BUT as a consequence in the sidebar widget for Recent Posts the same post title appears BIG, and that's not what I want.

So, instead I add the <h1> tag within the post, repeating the title. That's not what I want either, because then the post title appears two times as a result. I can change the wording of the title for the <h1> tag of course, but that looks funny to having both the post title and the h1 title displayed in large font.

How do you search-engine-optimizing-wordpress-bloggers properly use the <h1> tag?

    I just went through this trying to optimize a WP theme myself. You need to check because each theme is different. Usually the post is designated H1 so you do not have to do anything. But then you can manually add H2 , H3 and H4 tags within the article itself.

    Also, when done do a view source on your page to see that there are not 2 H1 tags, sometimes a theme will give the Title a H1 tags also and if you have 2 H1 tags within the page it will confuse the spiders.

      Yes, actually I was just now trying some variations and looking at the source code. I'm using the Magazine Basic theme and indeed I noticed the post title is automatically tagged H1. My confusion came about because apparently SEOpressor doesn't pick that up and gives my post a lower score since no h1 tag is registered by the plugin. So I should just leave it at that?

  • Hi Johanna,

    Yes - you can leave it at that, but be sure to use sub headers and assign H2's and H3's to them. They also help to break up your content making it more readable.

    You can also use variations of your primary keyword in your H2's - the search engines get better every day at picking out related keywords.
