I don't know what xsitebuilder is, but there should be some way to import stuff into it... whats the url for the site you got it from?

As for uploading files to hostgator, yes you will need FTP software. My favorite is FileZilla - pretty simple, free and fast:

I use it all the time, and its great.

Back in the days of Internet Explorer 5 you used to be able to enter your FTP server in the address bar, as if you wanted to browse to a website, then drag and drop your files into the IE5 window. Worked well enough for anonymous FTP. I have no idea if that works today with all of the changes to security zones and newer IE versions.

I second the recommendation from rlnorthcutt about FileZilla. I use it a lot and have not had any problems. Another option would be to use the command line, but that's entirely up to you and how comfortable you feel about FTP commands.

Keep in mind FTP is not secure. You may want to ask your web host if they allow secure shell (SSH) connections. If so, you could start the SSH connection, and use port forwarding to tunnel FTP, sort of like a wrapper to protect yourself from prying eyes.

Another option is called secure copy (SCP). Take a look at winscp.net to download freeware to make SCP easy for you.

I use filezilla and it works quite well, but there are simpler ways. One
that I have used when something is screwed up is copy the files from
your desktop, and paste them to your site files. Not much can go
wrong with that one, but my pages are a little more light and simple
than most site pages.

Another option is to go to the files page of your site. I use the
DirectAdmin control panel, but cPanel has a very similar arrangement.
At the bottom of the files page there is a button "upload files to the
current directory." It has always worked flawlessly and quickly for me.

If you mean XsitePro - I can answer your second question (for the first one, depends on what it is you want to import exactly) ...

There's 'publishing details' tab within the program (I have first version so may be called something else).

Alternately, there are times when you just wanna slide something over to the server. Firefox has a handy add-on that I use A LOT. It's called FireFTP. Very cool to just click and open a new browser tab with FTP in it.

Filezilla seems to work pretty well and you can't beat the price. I prefer, however, WS_FTP.

You "ftp" your site directly from XSitePro's Publish function, there is no need for an additional FTP program.

Just enter your sites ftp information in the Publising Details tab and then publish the site by clicking the Publish button in the top tool bar.

You can't import templates to Xsitepro from documents unless it was created by the progam, you can try to copy the code but that doesn't always come out right. Also I have a number of pages I built with XSP and now the program has failed and I can't seem to get help from the company or answers at there forum.

I may have to start all over but if I do I'll get a better program, or maybe I'll just use my free web builder from Ewen Chia where anyone can get at my site Free Stuff And More, It has never failed me yet.

I used Filezilla for a long time until I got turned onto the FireFTP extension for Firefox. Works like a charm and is part of the browser.

Filezilla is the way to go. I have been using filezilla for many years and have experience no problems whatsoever

I've been using fireftp for some time now, and it's so quick and easy. It's a firefox plugin that you access from your tools menu, when you click on it, it opens a new firefox tab which you use for ftp.

No doubt file zilla is pretty good. I also use to download and upload file with file zilla. License free and simple to use.

I can not answer your question properly here because, I have not made 15 previous posts so I am not allowed to post URL style addresses even though they do not go anywhere. So I will attempt to contact you in another manner. What a pain!

With Xcite pro you can publish/ftp direct from the software. If you didn't want to do that you can always use a ftp client. I use filezilla and sometimes smart ftp.

I personally didn't like the CoffeeCup ftp program - it seemed slow to me.

I currently use filezilla and fireftp - both of which are great programs.

Try FireFTP -- its a plug in for firefox, free, and works great!

I am using Core FTP and I am very satisfied! It is free download, just write at Google Core FTP you will find a lot of sites. Very simple to use, when you start program Open Site Manager. For Site Name just write the name of your server, and Host/IP/URL. Something like servername.com After that only your user name and password from your hosting. You will have split screen vertically. Select folder on your home computer and folder on host, just drug and drop with mouse files to host or Vice-versa.

I used to use FlashFXP.
After I moved to Linux I started to use Konqueror as a FTP (Linux's browser).

I've used FileZilla for years and was reasonably happy with it, but have started having some bizarre issues recently. For example, only partially uploading directories or corrupting zip files that I uploaded for a client!

Since then, I've been reviewing other free and paid products and have come to the conclusion that SmartFTP seems to be the most professional, most reliable and generally best quality FTP app on the market and I'll be handing over my $49.95 for the Professional version very shortly!

The way I look at it is that we're all supposed to be working as Internet Marketers - not file copiers and for those of us who are reluctant to outsource this part of our businesses, we should at least have a reliable, professional solution in place that will get on with the job of transferring files for me without me having to go back and check every single file afterwards.

I'm not suggesting that we don't test our sites, just that it can sometimes be difficult to test EVERYTHING and miss a file that didn't get copied. This recently happened to me with a new install of Wordpress where it seemed to work fine until one day, I discovered a small glitch (can't remember where - somewhere in the admin interface). I ended up going through every directory and I found that FileZilla had decided that I only needed parts of some of the subdirectories that I'd included for upload. It's days have been numbered since that happened....!

I'm using CoreFTP since past 3 years and I'm quite Satisfied with it .

I just saw a thread in the main forum and wasn't going to bother digging up an old ftp thread but then came over here and it was active again. Here is the quote.

It is simple and you never run into password problems since you are already logged in and doing it from the control panel. I did have a day when Filezilla wouldn't log in. It works extremely well in the DA control panel as well.

I think filezilla is the best option for FTP upload. If you have dreamweaver and can configure it to work with live site that will be big time saver.

Try this free ftp program for firefox. it's really simple to use and it's free. You'll be amazed at how simple yet comprehensive it is.

I have used it for about 2 years, the only issue I have ever come across was when trying to upload folders with lots of files, in which case it might miss out some files.

As you shouldn't be doing that too often I'm sure you will find it of great use.

Use Adobe Dreamweaver to layouting the page. After the completion of web pages upload files to the server with the help of an ftp software. I think Cuteftp is one of the ftp software.

I'm a fan of FTP voyager for FTPing.

FileZilla is great!
FileZilla supports both ftp and sftp -- so if you've got secure shell access (ssh), you can use sftp with FileZilla.
However -- be aware that nearly all ftp programs store the usernames & passwords in cleartext (as well as sending them via cleartext -- so don't use this with unsecured WiFi) -- sftp prevents your login credentials from being sent in cleartext, however, it does not stop FZ from storing them in cleartext on your computer.

It's a known weakness in the ftp programs, and many people have gotten their hosting accounts hacked because someone hacked into their computer and grabbed all the ftp credentials stored in their ftp program (they are stored in a known location, after all.)

To upload site using FTP I use FTP commander. You can install it in your PC. Here you will find New Server option in the top, click it and then you will find some option. In the Name section you will put any name to recognize your site, in the FTP Server section you will put your site name using this format: ftp.sitename and in the user id section give 8 digit of your site name and last in password section give your whm password. Then click on the save. Its ok now for use.

Some additional comments on FTP programs. If you use Filezilla (and you probably should) and your computer is ever stolen you will have to contact everyone who you ever built a site for and saved their passwords and tell them to change all their's. (I bet most of you saved them even though security people tell us not to).
Filezilla is not good for moving files within a site or between 2 sites. For that you need something like Bitkinex. (you just run 2 instances)
