Is there a good software out there that will optimize a folder full of images for the web, without degrading the quality?

Yes that's what I'm looking for, something that will do it in bulk, and not have to do them one at a time.

Just want to see if anyone has tried any of them, and if the quality was ok?

If your running windows XP, there is the image resizer - its part of the microsoft power toys collection for XP.

You can select all of the images you want to resize, - select the size you want all of the images. The program will resize, and rename all of the images to a new file name, so you still have the original.

The image resizer is one of the main reasons why I have kept windows xp. I have yet to find anything that can replace it.

If you want to resize all of the images in a folder - open the folder - ctrl+a - right click one of the selected images - resize - select size - ok.

What I mean by optimize is to make the file size smaller, without making the actual dimensions smaller, or lowering the quality. So that my website will load faster. And yes I'm looking for something that will do an entire folder of images at once.

At one time I had a website bookmarked that would do it. All I had to do was input the URL of my website, and it would download and optimize all of the images on the page. But that was several years ago, and now I can't find it.

Someone explain to me how photoshop can resize hundreds of images at 1 time.

Lets say I have a folder with 500 - 8 megapixel images - how can photoshop resize all of them to 640X480?

I thought photoshop had to open each image, 1 at a time, resize it, then move to the next image. So does photoshop have some kind of bulk resizer or something?

This might help PS RESIZE, or not!

Fireworks does batch resize and export easily and you can configure your output.

You can use "PhotoRazor" to do just what you looking for , Just give it the folder and it will resize all the photos at once (may be few minutes for hunders of photos)

Also you can adjust the new photo quality.

Google for "PhotoRazor". Its best and free.

I used Gimp to create optimized web images and do is select the type of files such as JPEG and make the preview to check picture quality. In addition, it will optimise animated GIF files to the Internet.

      XNView

Free and does bulk operations (Tools --> Batch Processing). The optimisation isn't quite as good as photoshop, but it's not far off.

Set up an action in PS and then you can perform a range of the same ops on all the images in a folder. works like a marco in excel

Yahoo's Smush.it (cannot post link here due to scatological
    screening technology)

It can trim some images down in size quite a lot.

Best practices would be to use Adobe Fireworks (compresses
better than PhotoShop) then run through Smush.it.

I was looking just last night for a way to reduce my PNG images and came across this article - Clever PNG Optimization Techniques - Smashing Magazine

This then lead me to download - psydk.org - PngOptimizer (checked with Virus Total and it's safe)

I also learned in photoshop if I use the Posterize feature, as well as PngOptimizer then I reduced images from say 160kb down to about 110kb without image quality loss.

Btw, PngOptimizer also handles gif, jpg, etc.

I'm sure there are more ways/tools but I was pretty happy to reduce one of my images by 50k!
