Just wondering your thoughts on what is more important, web desin or SEO? what should i spend most of my time on? My thought is that a very good website with no ranking is not much good, but a lousy website that ranks on the first page of google is better. So maybe, we all should throw up a so / so website and work on SEO?

Both go hand in hand. On one side of the equation, if you spend all your time and money on making your site user friendly and none on SEO, your site will convert, but you will have very few customers to convert.

On the other side of the equation, if you spend all your time and money on SEO and none on design, you will get lots of visitors but they will exit your site as quick as they came.

You can't have one without the other and be successful. My recommendation is to spend your money on a kick-ass design and spend your time on SEO. There are a number of free ways to promote your site...they may be tedious, but if you're strapped for cash it's your best option.

I agree entirely with the god father and to be honest web design these days although it can be time consuming is not expensive or complicated when using platforms like WordPress or similar so a good web design is not too hard to achieve.
This then allows you to spend time on SEO which from my experience is very time consuming but absolutely necessary if you want the site to succeed. good luck.

It really depends on your marketing plan.

If you're not going to market your site through the search engines, then there's really no reason for SEO.

I disagree ... inexpensive? complicated? Wordpress is a blog platform... it comes down to the long lasting problem that EVERYONE THINKS they are a designer.

Choosing a theme has nothing to do with web design. it's a general users way of getting a website up with the lack of ability TO design (or code). Thats why there are themes.

        The designers create the themes.

And design isn't cheap. Would you design a website for $100?

Sorry for calling this out... but come on.

I sincerely believe that you need to focus on the web design. Your target audience is the common people and not the search engines only. But the thing is that there must be a delicate balance between the two. You must give equivalent amount of attention. Remember if the users don't find your website interesting, they are going to find an alternative. Make sure first you make users happy, then focus on search engines.

I'm not sure what you mean my 'common people'. How do you typically find a new website? Either word-of-mouth or through search engines, right? Without attention to SEO, what's the point of making users happy if you don't have any? Unless you plan on using PPC to generate traffic, you need to work on web design and SEO simultaneously

Excellent Design + Poor SEO = Site with no SE visibility (poor traffic)

Excellent SEO + Poor Design = Site that sucks! Bounce rate is enormous! People will leave in seconds.

I agree for the most part. SEO is important Even If you are only planning on PPC, escpecially for Google. SEO is one of Google's Landing Page Quality scoring criteria so it's must.

There really is no reason that you should have to sacrifice one for the other. Yeah I know, more graphics can mean less content. But you can make your relevant images SEO with relevant names, alt tags and captions. Non relavent images, name them a number with no tags and they get ignored increasing the overall landing page quality.

Get a design that is "good enough" such as a free wordpress theme or HTML / CSS template.

Next get traffic via SEO. Once you have traffic and potentially income; tweak the design for improvements.

Both are important so just strive for improvement in each area. Work on SEO one day, design the next.

This definition separates Web design from web programming, emphasizing the functional features of a web site, as well as positioning web design as a kind of graphic design. The process of designing web pages, web sites, web applications or multimedia for the Web may utilize multiple disciplines, such as animation, authoring, communication design, corporate identity, graphic design, human-computer interaction, information architecture, interaction design, marketing, photography, search engine optimization and typography.

I think the webdesign and SEO must be done together. With a good plan in mind, it's easy to make a site SEO friendly. However, the designer must know how to put the important elements in the page to obtain maximum of advantage in search engines.

The website content is essential too.

I always design websites based on the content that will be put on them. Once I know the content that will be going on the pages, I optimize the pages for "On Page SEO" as much as I can.

From the content I can also research and figure out which keywords to target and work that again into the overall SEO campaign for the site.

Regarding site design, I tend to make it look as professional as possible given the audience the website and content is intended for. Most importantly is the you want to present the content in a way that is readable and looks the best for the person reading your site.

I tend to stay away from the fancier web items like flash and animated gifs etc. I like to create clean looking sites that are easy to navigate.

Both web design and SEO go hand in hand and are equally important, your design should have your user in mind and not be too complicated.

The aspects of the design should incorporate SEO techniques as it is being built.

A good clean design will be easy for the search engines to index with good and relevant content. Ultimately as others have said, they should work together.

    Hi Bob,
Basicly it depends on what marketing approach you have selected and what kind of website and customers you target.

As it is mentioned earlier in the thread, usually it goes hand in hand. Traffic has no value, if it doesnt convert to the action you want them to perform.

So one really doesnt go without the other.. Normally.

But for affiliate marketing many go for PPC traffic with for instance adwords, or as part of a network or email marketing where SEO is not even used in any way.

So it really does depend on what product you have and what action you want your website visitors to perform and your overall marketing strategy

But a rule of thumb would usually be...

    Get the product.
    Specify the target.
Create a high converting website for that target group
    Get traffic.
    Analyse traffic and conversions,
Possible A/B splittestings, to better conversions on website.

When you think about it, a good designer needs to follow most of the things that relate to on page optimization ...

Beginning in the page title, meta description tag, heading (h1) and subheadings (h2, h3 ...), content, content emphasis (strong, em), describe the elements (alt, title) structure of the site (2 to 3 clicks) and navigation (link anchors in the text), the speed of response pages, etc, etc ...
I think many people misunderstand what it means to be a web designer ...
Web designer is not only graphical solution of the page ...

I would say that almost everything that is comfortable to search engines, comfortable and to the visitors ...

SEO should be part of each page you create (in my opinion) unless you're doing an ad swap or something and sending visitors to your squeeze page through email marketing. If this page is only up for a short time (during the swap), or any such similar situations, then you probably don't have to bother with SEO.

But, even if you're advertising (Adwords, banner advertising, etc.) and your site/page will be online for any period of time, then doing SEO is not only recommended but can be done so quickly that there's no excuse not to add on-page SEO.

Web design, even if it's "simple", should be considered SVO - Site Visitor Optimization lol. Depending on what you're trying to achieve, graphics and layout can play a huge role in achieving your goals.

Remember, web design isn't always about photoshop and beautiful images, it could be text/colors/layout etc.

I say, first define what you want your visitor to do. Then, as you create your page, create the graphics/layout to "funnel" them to your target (optin, sale, affiliate link, etc). Meanwhile, add on-page SEO since it's so dang easy and is good practice!

Well said, fbhc! SEO is a part of website design when you understand that site design is a little more than a free HTML template and SEO is more than synonyms for your topic.

The coolest looking website is pointless if it does not work. The best SEO will deliver 'hits' but not 'visits'. Where I come from, hits bounce, visits do not. 100% bounce rate is OK if your trying to get a visitor to an affiliate offer or sales page, but not if you'd like them to see your wicked cool site.

SEO in most cases should not be a higher priority than site design and the general value you give to people, in essence SEO is all backlinks. Except for a few things to watch out for like what platforms to build your site on and generally how it all works, eventually content is going to drive the site. No matter what trick you find out there are smarter people working at search engine companies to see to it that everyone plays a fair game, and that game is giving value to people. No trick is going to top it.

SEO can be good to fine tune things and more importantly to avoid some dangerous pitfalls(like Googles Irregular Content Filter) so I highly suggest you learn as much as you can but not before you create good content to be driven by your SEO marketing plan.

The below is the best comment here.

Beyond the overly-repeated statement that SEO and web design are both important, web design is obviously more so. Despite what some are writing, SEO is not the only way to market your site. But guaranteed people will just leave your site if it's designed badly.

That's not to say more complicated or flashy design; in fact, the best sites are simple. Bad web design = complicated & flashy. So by bad design I'm assuming you mean something overly-complicated, or a site with crappy HTML tables or something along those lines.

Ultimately, SEO can be important but it depends on the strategy your using. Huge sites like Twitter/Myspace/Digg/Facebook/Youtube and many more didn't even bother with SEO and their marketing strategies didn't use it. Can you imagine if any of those sites' design was horrible?(You won't need much imagination in Myspace's case).

It doesn't really work the other way. I don't know anybody who had horrible design yet compensated with SEO. SEO naturally comes through creating a great site, and you can improve it with techniques and such but ultimately the best SEO is just having a quality site. So if you have great design and use social media and word of mouth marketing, SEO may just come on its own.

SEO is most important because without that no one will visit your excellently designed website.

Excellent design does not necessarily mean that people take an intake of breath upon viewing it - no site is that amazing.

    Ok apart from www.jimcarrey.com

Majority of websites are far from that.

Your site has to work. Sounds simplistic but that is its primary function. So it does not have to do everything except make the tea, if all web visitors want to do is read your latest thoughts on tea production.

Some of the hugest sites are incredibly simple in design terms.

WoW! I haven't seen this site before, although i LOVE Jim Carrey. WoW! My DREAM is to make site like this, site for artists of all kind. And I'm good at it!
Recently I made one site for one painter, and that one week when it was submited at theFwa, and now from other sites for web awards, I noticed that is good to have breath taking site. You get lots of traffic immediately, and people will bookmark you, tweet you, spread the word etc.

Ofcourse it's important to have good SEO and good design. But sometimes it also depend on content. If you are some unknown artist (this is my field, that is why I compare with artists, there are also other examples) than is much important to invest in good design than in SEO. But that design has to be REALLY good.

Wow... I must assume you people who are raving about jimcarey.com must have your tongue firmly planted in cheek. I waited about 30 seconds for the worm, or whatever it is to do something, and bolted... even knowing it was being raved about.

There is absolutely no reason to be so lazy as to design a website without focusing on both design and SEO. None.

Don't touch your mouse until you have already planned how the two will interact to produce a successful website. Doesn't matter if you/your client are willing to spend money to market the site... blowing off free qualified traffic is insanity.

Design decisions are made after researching the target audience. Organic optimization is done after investigating what phrases are being used by that same group to find the product/service offered by your/your client's website.

One universal... websites are not grocery stores. The idea of forcing a potential customer to walk by aisles and aisles of stuff to get where they want to go is lunacy in web design. Get the money as fast as you can, and go on to the next customer. As cold as that sounds, that is just plain good business. Excellent customer service after the sale will lead to a whole new group of free customers.

The higher a website ranks on the search results, higher the chances of an online user visiting the website. First, you can avoid creating the menu on the left side of a web page. If unavoidable, is another way to text with rich keywords at the top or above the menu on the left so that the text will be the first to be read by engines.Finding find that balance between frustration and mismanagement lack of experience that has caused this new spending, and relief that our daughter was not injured was not a difficult task.

I hope you won't bother guys of what I said.

Anyway for me both of them really matters. Let's just say if you have a high targeted traffic to your site but your design it's kinda simple or not to attractive, You're losing all your chances in making money.

Well, you can entice someone like a newbie but when it comes to an expert well, they just have to hit the close button at the upper right hand corner.

I guess both of them really works. A lot of gurus right now or some internet marketing expert didn't even know how to set-up - I mean some. But all they did is to pay someone do the extra effort. Because they also have deep pockets and they really can afford.

I think you should never lose hope, coz there are lots of pre define blogs all for free and there is nothing to worry about. Try to search free wordpress template or themes. Just for sure you know where you put your optin page or your squeeze page. That way you can capture the email of your visitors and contact them in the future.

            Happy making money!

It really depends on your goals. If you are a mass market product that sells on good deals and bargains, then obviously you need to focus on SEO. You may still want to get a user friendly and clean website that can engage customers without any stress. However, if you are a niche/ premium service provider or a boutique agency, you need to have a great looking website. Thats because the kind of people you target will mostly not look for you on search engines, but will seek you out through design galleries, blogs etc.
Ever notice how Google search only throws up very mass looking websites on its first 10 pages? You get the idea!

While both are equally important, starting out with a so-so design is not terminal. If they don't like what they see, your early visitors are not going to make a mental note to not return.

I would recommend that you get your site structure fleshed out, then put your best shot together and get the site published as soon as possible. Do the basics with on-page SEO - keywords and titles. It's very important to get the structure right. If you change the structure later - page names, keywords, titles etc. - the search engine indexing will be all awry for a while and your off-page SEO work might not be as effective.

Once you have your site up you can start your off-site SEO work. While you're hammering away with this you can go back to your site to work on the design.

It's a parallel effort. You just need to start getting visitors ASAP.

If you only focus on web design of your website and do nothing on SEO, then your website looks good and user-friendly but you have few customers or users to use it. On the other side if you spend your time and money on only SEO then you can get more customers and users to use your website. The usability and the design of the site is more important than SEO. You need to get the foundation right, this would require testing and tweaking the site.

Even if your site is ranked in the top ten of Google and is getting alot of traffic.. but your site is not user friendly, full of bugs or its not saying the rignt message to drawn customers in, you won't get alot of sales or leads.

You would need to test what is working on your site and change whats not working.

SEO is more for the SEs. Design is more for humans. However, I tend to focus on design first and SEO last. Because I like to strive for quality. You usually make more money when you focus on both.

Start with SEO and then go back and spruce up the design... or do the opposite (like me), but doing things the opposite way my come back to haunt you if you get burned out really easily.

Having said all of that. If I had to choose between one or the other... I'd choose SEO. Time and time again, I've watched people buy things from web sites with horrible designs, copy, etc.

But don't we all do the same in real life. Sure the Porsche dealership is nice and shiny (can eat off the mens' bathroom floor... directly under the stall), but the dank, moldy used car dealership is more affordable.

Actually both are important, it's just which will you do on the first place. So for me, I really focus on my website first because what is the use of having more traffic but no response from them due to unorganized or no quality website that you have right? So after creating great website you now focus your attention to SEO because this could really help you like in your making money online or any promotional purposes. So it's like the other way around what's the use of having great web design but no visitors coming and signing up with the site? So that's the idea there.

both are important and it goes hand-in-hand.

    a) you can spend all the time in the world to make a pretty web design and not focus on seo = people's can't find your site
    b) do not spend time on web design but spend time on seo = people find your site but get put off with your website due to its lack of navigation (or whatever it is that may not appease to them in terms of search and functionality)
    c) why not spend time on web design & seo so users can find you on search engines, etc. and when they are on your website, they won't get lost and can find what they want.. and they are converted/hooked on to your site

you need to spend time in both web design and seo. information architecture has to be emphasized on the web design process for functionality, ease of navigation, etc. and you also have to do seo so your site can be found by your future visitors, etc.

Excellent Design + Poor SEO = Site with no SE visibility (poor traffic)

Excellent SEO + Poor Design = Site that sucks! Bounce rate is enormous! People will leave in seconds.

I would always take the design of any site in terms of priorities:
(btw, sorry to join in on the discussion so late)

Everytime I build a new site, I divide the process into stages/phases:

Among those list of phases, Design comes first! What is attractive to the eye will generally bring in repeat customers/visitors, even if they are hoping for better content.

However, if I go to a site, and the design is bad, I would never want to go back, and I'm skeptical of whether it is a real site or one of those boxed solutions with no extensibility.

So, in this case, I would definitely put Design first, and then SEO.

Why not just do both as both are pretty easy unless your are talking about off site SEO. That gets harder as it involves getting links from other sites. Doing all the on site SEO is pretty easy so why not just do both?

If you are doing something like an adsense site then great looking design is not always your friend. I have a few sites that get huge click through rates because the bright blue links on the adsense ads are the boldest thing on the site. Everything else is a shade of gray literally! The design itself does not exactly suck but it is very plain looking. 50 to 75% click through rate rocks though.

If your intent is to drive organic traffic - you can't have one without the other. You need SEO to bring the traffic and good "design" to engage your audience.

    But.....

There's a lot more to it than just SEO and design.

However, without knowing what the objectives are for the site/page, it's difficult to say what else you need to focus on. There are a lot of moving pieces that need to be considered - not the least of which is who are you targeting, what are you offering and what do you want do you want them to do?

Before you can begin to do SEO or build an effective website that converts, you've got to answer those questions (and several others depending on the answers to those).

That may not have been the answer you were looking for, but really - before you ask whether or not SEO or Design is more important, you need to define your target and objectives first.

That's a strange question, since it's not something you can compare.

A nice design makes your visitors feel comfortable, easy on their eyes, professional impression.

While SEO has the only purpose to rank high in google.

It's like asking, what's more important, a good car or a good car insurance.

IMHO, both are equally important... you can create a very attractive and fast loading site but without SEO, how can you drive traffic to your site? consequently... with SEO you can easily drive peoeple to your site.. but with a very unattractive site how can you keep people coming back to your site?

Both are important. A web design plays a key role in creating functional and attractive websites to communicate your business better to the world around you. But SEO is also one of the most effective forms of publicity.but refers to the science and art of making your website, or pages attractive and high in traffic until it crawls to the top of the Google search results pages.

I think both are very essential for your web page. Without the eye-catching web development,SEO doesn't perform. SEO would become efficient while a web development is being very eye-catching and simple to use. Both are very useful for development of your company. Web style is what that performs to provide a better look to your experience on web indicates performs to make a identification 'website' for company and the next phase is to tell the individuals about solutions over web and process is done by promotion for solutions . SEO provides solutions in promotion for company web page over look for website optimization as well allows in develop product identification for web page .

    Both.

SEO = Lets google know what your site is about
Design = Lets google know if people like staying on your site

Your design is half the reason why people stay on your site or like coming to your site, because if the design is jacked up on a site, I rather find another site I enjoy being on then a site with amazing information, but looks like crap.

    I say both.

When you have a crappy design.. visitors will not like what they see.. it's difficult and annoying to navigate around your site so they leave right away.

As for SEO, you will need it to improve you site rankings.

Both are important, but I'll focus more on SEO. The first thing is to get a website up and running properly. Then focus on SEO to improve its ranking. Once it ranks well and profits, you may go back to improve the design. They're both ongoing work and can be improved together as we go.

  • In our opinion both - but for different reasons. One doesnt work without the other. But remember - off page seo is 80%

No reason why you shouldn't focus on both. Invest in an open source cms (e.g. drupal, Joomla or even WP) and you can have both covered.
