I need help out there!

Guys I wanted to build a small website and I am a newbie and I need help from anybody. I intend to build the site in this free web hosting site:
freehostingcloud.com

The questions are as follows:

-> What are the recommended tools to be used?

-> What type of website proramming language should I use(I think freehostingcloud.com recommends PHP)

-> What are the basic steps I should follow to build the site?

-> What ever programming language you prefer, please state the title and author of the books you would recommend.

-> Finally, roughly how many days would it take to build just the homepage of my website as a newbie?

OK I think that's all for now...more questions later. I really need your help and it would be highly appreciated...thanks.

  • Ok seriously building sites isn't a 'learn in a night' type of thing. It takes a lot of knowledge and time.

    1. tools: Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver or CODA (or other HTML Editors).
    2. XHTML, CSS, Basic Javascript and PHP Knowledge if you're intergrating onto a CMS (Wordpress).
    3. Basic steps? Should really start learning the languages stated above..
    4. Books? Theres enough online.

What i suggest is to outsource your web development needs.. if you are urgently in need of a website etc. Because you will come across MANY errors etc if you're going to start fmor scratch.

    • wevo, first of all, thank you very much for your very very useful feedback.

I didn't mention in my post why I wanted to build a website. Well I am not in a rush...I just want to learn how to do it from scratch and work my way up...say may be with the required tools I would build the homepage or what ever locally and then upload online on a free web hosting server.

From you anymore comments or suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Dreamweaver is the best but it is so expensive. It depends what kind of site you want to build. For some types of websites it might be better to use wordpress for blogs, magento for ecommerce etc. rather than trying to make the website yourself using scripting languages.

  • Dreamweaver recommend!
  • For a beginner download Notepad ++ and head over to http://w3schools.com and start learning HTML and CSS.

Don't go out of your depth and learn Javascript and PHP as it will put you off from Web Development big time.

Take it one step at a time.
  • Better if you learn html tags, also you should learn Photoshop, Flash, Front Page, Dream waver
  • Hi Tango!

I will tell you something which you will not believe! Well actually you need not learn any thing to make your first professional looking site. The internet is full of options to help you out.

Well if you don't believe me then check out my signature and have a look at the website. I had built it when I had no knowledge about programming languages!

All that I did was selected the best website hosting provider which took $4.5 per month. Then I purchased a Domain name from godaddy.com which took normally $8. The hosting company will provide you with tools to make the website. Normally they are more or less like "Drag n Drop" type.

After you are done with the site publish it. It's all done and you will have a professionally looking website!

Be careful while selecting the hosting service provider! This is where everything matters!!!

Best of luck! and do PM me if you have made your first website
  • I agree with fazlerocks. We used Frontpage and Dreamweaver for years. Now everything is Joomla. Hostgator has many options for CMS or blog or other style free/included stuff. Wordpress and Joomla or other anything else will take alot of studying to learn, youtube has alot of free tutorials to learn and you can pm me if want a free eBook. I suggest to learn either wordpress, joomla or even drupal for your needs. You won't need to a whole lot of coding with these which will give you time to learn photoshop and learn how all the plugins and/extensions work.
  • A lot depends on your current computer abilities. I started developing my web site in my spare time about a month ago, with just basic knowledge of html. I've since taught myself CSS and learned more about html, SSI, php, etc. But I have a pretty decent computer background and pick that stuff up quickly. More importantly, you need to spend time learning how to drive traffic to your site and how to monetize it properly.
  • than you for the nice tips on creating a website, i'm building right now my third website, but it's a little time consuming, i prefer doing wordpress sites, easily to make or well jomla lie jbhc said, very flexible to work with .
  • let me help you. email me.
