How do I clone a WP site?

Let's say I have a domain with wordpress installed, as well as a bunch of plugins configured just how I want them, as well as a customized theme.

Is there a utility that will let me essentially copy everything, and then re-install it on another domain with all of the settings intact?

(of course I would have to make a few changes, especially the title, posts, and tags, but all the rest of the stuff being pre-configured would save me a ton of time!)

Yes, make a backup of your Mysql database and a Wordpress backup (from the Wp-admin section)

    Great source: codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress

Thanks- looks like a good resource.

Now if I only wanted to copy over the plugins and theme, and leave everything else alone, would it work if I uploaded just those files (for example, the wp-content folder) from one wp installation to another?

FYI - I have not used it but it does exactly what you want...

BackupBuddy : PluginBuddy | WordPress Plugins

Else here is how I do it manually, for free...

I like BackWPup Plugin for backing up everything, or just specific parts of a WordPress install, as well as the MySQL database.

WordPress › BackWPup « WordPress Plugins

After backing up database - open the MySQL file with text editor, do a Search & Replace on the URL:
        olddomain.com/directory-if-any _to_ newdomain.com/directory-if-any-or-if-different
        (I like Notepad++ text editor)

Save and import into new MySQL database.

        FTP WordPress files to newdomain.com/directory-if-any-or-if-different

If database &/or user name &/or password is different on new server, you have to adjust your wp-config.php file.

        Cheers,
        S.

Once you are all done and need to back up your site...

Dan Coulter wrote a great plugin for backing up WP sites to Amazon S3. He has two version of it out...the newest one is V 2.03.

It is great and works like a charm, once you set up your Amazon S3 account. We now use it for all of our sites and our customers' sites.

The cloning process is very simple. All you have to do is give your login information for this plugin and you will start the cloning process. If you want to clone copies of several blogs, you can enter a list of blogs via a CSV file.

Try using the wp-backup plugin. Do a backup with that and then use a find and replace software to search for your old domain and replace with your new domain. Copy all files to the new webspace and upload your new sql file to a new database. Change the wp-config.php file for your new domain. You're done

the fastest way i can do for such activity is creating the blog on my localhost using XAMPP or similar programs.

after it already working and setup (including wp, plugins, custom theme, etc)

then i compress it as a zip file, except wp-config.php

upload it to different domains, then i upload the wp-config.php based on the database and domain related to it's configuration file.

i believe it will be cut 50% of time to upload the website one by one.

and the lates info i got, there's a tool named WPTWIN... find it using Mr. G

Yes, I second that. WP Twin is the way to go to duplicate wp sites rapidly.

(It's the new Wordpress cloner tool from Jason Fladlien and Wilson Mattos.)

It's a freaking dope! It makes exact replicas of your entire setup -- with all the plugins, all plugin settings, themes, and even the external files and folders (like the download folders) And then you just install that clone on a new domain and get the exact duplicate of your site... with all the settings intact and all the links set correctly.

(I made 3 sites in one evening with it.)

But the best part -- it makes a 100% proof wordpress backups. (There's a video of the Jason Faldlien wiping out a live membership site and restoring it in under a minute.)

Give it a shot -- you can try it free for a month.

      Allen,

I was told today, from Jason's assistant, that I may have to disable my plugins on a particular site I own in order to be able to clone it. Have you ever heard this? I understood, like you, that all plugins and settings would be cloned exactly. But I guess that is not the case.

Have you ever had this problem? I would really like to know if I have to do this and I can't get any response from Wil or Jason for like 3 days now through the support desk.

If you can offer any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it!

I agree. I bought it and it’s pretty awesome. You can use it to create a master file or a WP backup in case your site gets hacked.

Basically you put the WPTwin file on your server and run it. It will give you a button to create a clone that you can download to your own computer. You reverse the process using a new install of WP.

There are some good instructional videos on the site but the process is pretty simple.

How does WP twin compare to backup buddy? Price similar? Backup buddy single site edition is only $47. Thanks

I've never used Backup Buddy so I can't compare it. I paid $77 for WPTwin.

I've only used WPTwin on a couple of trial sites and I've not had to disable plugins but that doesn't mean it won't happen to some people.

I'll be testing it out more this week. But, from what I've seen, it's pretty damn awesome! The price tag is high (imo) but for what it does, it's the best I've come across. Blog zapper (I think that's what it's called - see the classified ads section) is pretty good but I don't think it saves widgets, plugins, settings.

Once I test WPTwin more I'll feel more confident in saying it's perfect but so far I'm loving it and it's going to save me crazy amounts of time!

Just wanted to come back for an update to my issue with WP Twin.

Problem was solved today. It was not the plugins after all. The problem was with the database user permissions I used when I set up the site.

WP Twin apparently requires database user permissions to be set to all. Once I changed the permissions to allow all, the clone deployed perfectly.

Thanks to Jason and Will for their help in resolving this issue.

Just wanted to do a quick follow up to this post, as it's been a few months.

I decided to go try out both backup buddy, and WP twin. I'm now using WP twin exclusively. It's such a breeze to use- I'm literally able to clone my site hundreds of times per week if I want to. I'd highly recommend WP twin for anyone looking to clone their wordpress site.

Why not exporting the blog using WP's own export tool, and then uploading the XML using the internal importing tool?

WPTwin works wonderfully for backing up and cloning your Wordpress site. It's fast and easy to use. You can do it manually, but I've not done it to say how.

Pardon me for the following dumb question: what are the main reasons a person would want to clone their site? I'm guessing to take advantage of SEO for different domains, but I'm pretty technically ignorant so I'm only guessing.

If my guess is right, would a redirect do the same thing, or not? Any other reasons you would want to clone your blog?

      Hey there Greg Guitar,

The cloning thing is mainly for Internet Marketers who need to create hundreds of site with the same canvas.

      For example:

YOU create a guitarists site with the main domain guitarplayer.com

You want guitarists to easily create their own guitar sub-site like bob-stewart.guitarplayer.com
      ron-bowker.guitarplayer.com
      rick-streatch.guitarplayer.com
      etc.

And you want ALL THE SITES CREATED TO LOOK THE SAME for a branding reason or else.

Then you want the possibility to easily and rapidly create the sub-domains to an exact clone of the main site. All the plugins, configuration, permissions, features are replicated exactly from the main site.

      There you go

You would also clone them for quicker set up.

I have a blank version of a wordpress site with all the plugins installed and set up how I like them as a backup.

Using BackupBuddy I don't even need to install Wordpress on the new site. I just upload the backup file and BackupBuddy php file to my new site via FTP, point to the php file in the browser (e.g. http://mynewsite.com/backupbuddypage.php) and click a couple of buttons and I have a fully set up site to customise to whatever theme I am doing, saves hours...
