Can you build a WordPress site without hosting?

Okay, so I want to build several sites but not ready to commit to hosting plans yet. Is there a way to actually build a site in Word Press without a hosted account? Like you can with FrontPage with preview through the browser...
I will be very interested to see how a site looks in a theme and whether it is ready to be hosted before it actually is hosted.
Hope I am making this a clear enough question.
Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Julia

There are a couple of ways to do this:

1 - Run XAMPP on your PC - this will give you the standard Apache - MySQL - PHP environment you need to install WordPress locally. apache friends - xampp for windows

2 - If you have a spare computer (an older one will work) install LINUX Server (I recommend Ubuntu) on it with Apache - MySQL - PHP. A little more involved but more versatile, especially if you are working on several sites (this is the method I use for all my prototype sites)

  • Hi there!

Yes you can build and run WordPress CMS on your very own computer with Localhost XAMP and WAMP application. but i wont recommend you that..... :/ bcz a lot of plugins doesn't work on localhost and that is the main drawback, i would suggest there are tons of hosting provider which gives you the free one month plan so you can signup with them and do all practice your WordPress website in it. I have some hosting providers names with one month free plan, let me know if you are interested 2 know
  • I use XAMPP. Works great!

  • Yes there is. You can run Wordpress in your localhost.

    1. Download xampp.
    2. Install it in your computer.
    3. Download Wordpress at wordpress.org
    4. Extract the zip file in your www or public_html directory.
    5. Run your site in your browser.
  • The site will go in htdocs folder under xampp rather than public_html
  • I strongly recommend professional hosting. Mainly because you can host unlimited WordPress websites for beans and have the ability to do a site backup and restore if you or anyone else breaks your website(s).
