Wordpress update help!

Hey guys,

My father-in-law has a site with WP vs. 2.5.1.

Can he "safely" update (via the update button) to the newest version without losing his work?

Will it automatically import his posts?

He has a lot on there...would hate to lose it. Although he could copy/paste from his pc.

However, should he backup first? And how would I do that for him?

Thanks guys!

    Hi Nathan

With all that at stake he should definitely take precautions before doing the upgrade

1 - Take a full file backup of the site, using FTP or the File Manager in your CPanel
2 - Take a backup of your MySQL database - PHP MyAdmin is good for that.
3 - Make sure all the plugins are at the latest release level, update them if necessary. In fact after doing that you may also wish to disable the plugins (and re-enable them after the upgrade)

By doing this you can always build the site back to the state it's currently in, just in case one of your plugins or themes is incompatible with the latest version of WordPress.

    Hope this helps

    Bill
